Whirring noise at idle
Man I am totally pissed at my car. Well today I ran around for errands and my car ran smooth as a babys butt. Then I went to my house stayed home and took a lovely sunday nap.
I then got in my car to head to Krispy Kreme because I wanted some doughnuts and when i started up my car I heard a strange whirring noise when it was idleing. I was like WTF is this! It isnt to loud but kinda prominent when insid the car and a little bit when outside of the car. I noticed the noise amplified as a moved the steering wheel slightly at a stop. It also made the noise when I was moving slowly too. When I am at a good speed a hear nothing.
Notes: Car makes weird noise at idle and slightly amplifies when moving the wheel at low speeds.
I just got my power steering rack replaced about 5 days ago. I am thinking the pump or the belt????? Please help!

Re: Whirring noise at idle (civictildeath)
i dont think it is intake, could be but I have had my SRI for about 3 months now and never heard that noise before. I tried pinpointing it and it sounded(not to sure) like it was coming from the drivers side of the engine area.

It sounds like your powersteering pump. Have you ever been low on powersteering fluid before? It just might be natural ware or a failure of the pump and need to replace it. If it is your ps pump the reason why it might be louder at a stop is probably because at a dead stop your steering rack is going to harder to turn than if you are moving forward.

Re: Whirring noise at idle (HatchEh2)
how can i check and see if it is my powersteering pump. I cranked it after I got off work tonight and the whirring was louder and worse and lasted even until I got up to about 40 miles per hour. The sound isnt there that much when the car is fully warm???? And each time i turn while its cold espicially the sound gets a little bit louder.

Re: Whirring noise at idle (BauleyCivic)
I read on the advance auto website that pumps may start to whine when they get old because the bearing goes out on them. I also now know that my powersteering fluid is a darkkk brown (not good)and there is a bottle of some off brand power steering fluid in my trunk under neath where the wheel is. So my speculations, say that my pump is wore out and old and i need to change my fluid to right Honda ps fluid and I am good to go. So should I go buy the pump tomorrow at advance auto.
Is replacing a pump easy for a DIYer that is a novice, I have the downloaded version of the helms manual.
