Where to fill R12?

Where to fill R12?
I wanted to know where I can fill up the R12 a/c, or should I upgrade to a R134 a/c. How much would it cost to upgrade? I know the R12 is colder, but how much cheaper is it to fill the R134 then the R12?

I don't know about pricing, but, you should probably convert over to R134 since R12 isn't manufactured anymore. (At least I don't think it is)

R12 is not made anymore but their are still places that can charge your car if you still have R12, the problem is that if your car needs to be charged it means their is a leak in the system and legally they cannot recharge you untill the leak is fixed. We have been using some stuff at my work called "Hot Shot" which is like a fake R12 that will work in your car without doing any conversion to the A/C system.
I have no idea how much it is going to cost to upgrade to a R134a system but depending where you live it might be your only choice.

R12 are still made ....they are just hella more EXPENSIVE and hard to get unless you are IMACA certified you can't buy it.

Goto Discount Auto parts, or Pep Boys, and get the complete R12 to R134a retrofit kit, and put the sticker on that comes with the kit. My civic is a 92 so it came with the R12 system. The complete retrofit kit will cost you no more than $35. I have this on my civic now. Works like a charm and is very easy to install.

I've also heard of something called "freeze 12" which is a fakey as well. It's kinda expensive though. You're best long term choice would be retrofiting 134.

Re: Where to fill R12? (who00knows)
There really isn't any benifits to be had. R12 is the gas that car AC systems used/still run on. It wasn't/isn't frendily to the environment so the EPA made it ilegal to manafucture and conpanies started switching to R134a gas which still does the same thing it just is more environmentlly happy. R134a still gets as cold as R12 gas does it just takes longer for it to reach that point. If you car gets a leak in the AC system in the long run it will be chaper to convert it to run on R134a because R12 gas is becoming very expensive and harder to find. I hope that kinda helped you what it is,does.

It really depends on what car you have. R12 is more efficient at moving heat than R134a. Also, R134a is supposedly a smaller molecule and it tends to leak more than R12. IF you can find a place to charge it with R12 for cheap, go for it- if not then switch to R134a. Stay away from these bogus "moonshine" refrigerants. Some places install flammable gas that contminates the system and other shop's A/C equipment. IF you do a conversion, there is specific oil that needs to be installed with the R134a. See your dealer for details.

Re: Where to fill R12? (Vanilla4215)
R12 isn't being made anymore, but it is being recovered from old systems, and recycled. The price for a pound of R-12 is almost always over $60 to the consumer. Anyone that has a license to use R-12 may not add R-12 to a system that they know is leaking.
Go to any A/C shop, and have them draw out all the R-12. This will cost about $50 or so.
Go to a parts store, and get a R-134a conversion kit. Follow the instructions (the first of which is "Properly remove all R-12 from your system")
You'll be fine.
Some of the kits have a gauge to use, but I'll guess that isn't needed for most auto systems. Vans and SUVs with rear A/C units can benefit from the gauge, since you'll have to add more R-134a to the system than comes with the kit.
I did this with SWMBO's Previa, and it's cooling just fine, even in hazy, hot humid until September central North Carolina.
