where is the EGR valve in '93 Civic EX ?
Doh!
Check Engine light is going on when engine heats up (about 5-7 minuts from cold start) on my just purchased used '93 Civic EX.
I checked the DTC code using jumper on 2-pin diagnostic connector under gloves compartment >>>
It gave me DTC 12. Which is "EGR - exhaust gas recirculation lift valve".
After browsing internet, and reading about EGR valve, I finally know the chain of components to check: EGR solenoid, EGR velve position sensor, valve itself (probably needs to be cleaned), etc.
But where the hell is it?
I went to PepBoys and public library. They don't have the book for these civics (92-95, I believe).
I ordered one from Amazon, but it would come in 7 to 10 days.
Any of you guys have a picture of it (I don't know how it looks like)?
or diagram how to find it in my engine?
And, yeah, it's my first Honda. Please don't assume that I know basic stuff and all nicknames for honda's components
Please be easy on me.

no egr's on civics except the HX and VX
wierd. i just looked at the sticky for the engine codes, and 12 is sticky. wierd.
so the code is 2x [quick blink] - [slow blink] right? are u sure it's not code 2 and 10?

are you sure your checking the code right??

do a search under "egr" in archived and youll find a bunch of stuff.

Re: where is the EGR valve in '93 Civic EX ? (boosted_dc2)
well,
I believe it should be in all Honda's sold (or registered) in California.
It's part of the emission system. And California enforces stronger emission control.
But after your notes, I'm not sure anymore. I would go and check again this code.
boosted_dc2, thanks for the link. Very helpfull stuff (they have a lot of pictures).

well,
I guess, I was not correct the first time.
I see one long and two short flashes.
But the interval between long and a group of two short is about one second.
And then it cycles again.
Does it mean that one long is NOT a part of a code, but just the "header" of OBD-1 system?
And my DTC is not 12, but 02?
What is it, O2B - Oxygen sensor #2?
damn, this is worse, then I thought
does it mean that I have "more expensive" problem with emission system then I initially thought?
I hoped just to clean EGR valve, but now ...

reset your ecu and see if the codes com back....
and no you dont have an egr valve only accords, preludes, and the civic vx/hx have an egr....unless for osme reason you have a civic vx ecu in there....

Re: (v4lu3s)
you dont have 2 02 sensors, your abd1. chances are its the o2 sensor though, 9 out of 10 thats what it is. i just had a del sol i was working on that would blink 2 long and 2 short, it was the o2 sensor replaced it and it was all good

Re: (boosted_dc2)
abd1 = ?
I would not be surprized that the car I bought is partially made of parts found in junk yard.
So, ECU could be from the model which had O2 #2 sensor. And my engine does not have it ...
Well, have to wait for the book to come to see where that O2 sensor could be.
in the case I have it,
DTC 02 - is it bad sensor (self test)? or what it measures is way out of expected range?
The fact, that check engine is off while engine is cold makes me think, that sensor does exist, though. Otherwise it would go ON immediately.
PS: remember, it's California. Here engines could have any "emission junk" not found elsewhere (i could be wrong though )

Re: (v4lu3s)
Damn!
it's P07 (37820-P07-L01).
It's wrong ECU, I guess. Is it for VX?
Should not be on D16Z6, right?
And yeah, my engine does NOT have EGR valve. I found some pictures of motor with EGR. This space is empty under my hood...

Re: (v4lu3s)
well, the stupid question is:
1) could I drive with this ECU for now (until I find/buy P28)? with the assumption that I black-taped my "check engine" light.
2) or I have to start digging right away?
PS: somehow, P28 ECUs on eBay are all chipped. Should I go to junk yard? How much $$ I should expect to spend?

i would expect to pay 125-250 for a p28 depending on where you get it from.
and unless you need to pass emissions soon id not even worry about rushing to get the ecu, jstu wait til you get a good deal.

Re: where is the EGR valve in '93 Civic EX ?
Hey guys I have a 92 civic vx throwing code 12 as well. Any suggestions? Mine definitely has an egr and the lift valve was clean as a whistle. Also throwing a code 3 for my MAP sensor. Bought a new one and didn't help with the idle surging up and down. Thanks

Re: where is the EGR valve in '93 Civic EX ?
I would test resistance through the wires from the map and egr to the ECU. Rule out aging wire with high resistance first.
After that, it would be ground checks next.
After that, would finally be sensors themselves, first starting with the connectors.
