Just make something big enough to cover the spare tire part..(If you cant borrow one that is) Its gonna be covered by the carpet anyways... Just make it as nice and straight as possible

I couldn't find this image when I saw this thread, but just found the image again and remembered your questions.

Here is a photo, along with measurements, of my stock '98 Civic coupe trunk board. This would be the same shape for any '96-'00 Civic coupe or sedan.



I don't immediately have the measurements for a hatch here, but here is an image of a hatch trunk board (from the eBay link above).

I have personally taken a '96-'00 Civic coupe trunk board and cut it to fit perfectly into a '96-'00 Civic hatch. So if you have a hatch and find a '96-'00 coupe or sedan trunk board, you can make one to fit the hatch out of that. Just cut the front of the board off.

This is what I did, I went to the local home depot, after measuring my trunk, and bought a huge board and cut it into 3 pieces that fit into the trunk. So now as they crack or get warped (my trunk leaks a bit) I just replace them. It cost me about $12 for that huge piece, and the pieces have lasted me over 2 years now. So I recommend doing that.

I would also just recommend cutting one yourself from plywood, the OEM ones are not very high quality. The cardboard/particle board stuff they're made of isn't very sturdy.

According to 94EG8, the material the stock trunk boards are made out of is called masonite.

There has to be something similiar (smooth and lightweight), but stronger.

MDF. medium density fiberboard. make a cardboard template, I made it so it fits snug against the edges like that pic above, but I didnt make the little openings, just a flat peice that lays on the floor. You might need to make it in 2 peices depending on how much room there is to fit the peices in the car. Then cover it in carpet, it looks really nice and is super strong. I used 3/4 because I was planning on putting a sub box in but never did, you could go with 1/2 or maybe even 1/4 depending whats going on top of it.

Or, you can make your own lid out of plywood, and modify it to accomodate a full sized spare. I did this for my 96 EX

It doesn't sit perfectly flat, but it's damn close. I live in the country and commute 35 miles into the city, stuff happens. The retainer for the mini spare will hold the full sized deal if you just flip it over. I used what was left of the original masonite to cut a cover for the center - it's a place to store the tools, a poncho and a small electric air compressor.

Wow I was just dealing with this today.
So I couldnt find nothing the same to replace, so I hit up lowes and picked up the thinnest piece of plywood I could find. Cut, measure and BAM!
Fits perfectly so it works too
