When replacing an engine...? Axle and jack questions...
To get the axles off of the engine, do you need to separate the lower ball joint and control arm in order to swing the hub assembly and strut tower out enough? On most cars I've had to do this, and I almost always snag the boot when using that fork tool.
When raising or lowering the car to put the engine in from the bottom, can you use standard size jacks or do you need the larger ones?
all on a 92 dx

Don't use the fork, hit the side of the LCA where the ball joint taper goes through, HARD, with a large ball pein or dead blow hammer.

So just to be clear (going by the main thread on this) I need 3 long frame jacks, not normal sized ones?
How does this make the project any easier or cheaper than renting a cherry picker? Those jacks are expensive! A engine hoist is like 40$ a day.

use the cherry picker to lift the car and drop the engine from the bottom.
i usually break the ball joint, then undo the fork for the strut, pull towards me then to the side, freeing the axle then popping it out.

you do not need 3 jacks to drop a motor, i've dropped motors on the floor without engine cranes or cherry pickers with standard hand tools, 2 jackstands, a standard floorjack, and a spare tire

You either have no idea what the average cherry picker looks like or you've got access to some really cool big **** and take it for granted.

i don't know, everytime i've done a swap i just unbolt & unhook
everything & just pull the engine with a cherry picker. i would never
do a swap from the bottom enless i had to, just my opion.

Re: When replacing an engine...? Axle and jack questions...
So you guys only use one tire? Where do you use it? Just to get the car up high enough for the highest jack stand lock?
I need to take the engine out and look at the clutch before I go ordering parts. I also need to check the motor mounts to find the bad one. With this in mind I don't think spending 40$ on a hoist is worth it, because I'd have to rent it again when the parts come in.
So I'm guessing the process is:
*jack up car on stands
*take wheels off
*take components and front / rear mounts off
*loose left / right mounts
*lower car until it lands ??? Do this by the front bumper or the sides?
*remove left / right mounts
*Raise car to slide engine out ??? Do this by the front or the sides?
Where does the tire come into play?

and big gear eh? Yea i have a car hoist... i've used the engine hoist to lift the car by using a tow strap strung around the 2 motor mounts. so before you start assuming things, stfu. use your head.
O Btw.
58 minutes and your engine should be out. Yes, i've done it already.

half inch ratchet. 100 percent of the time it works everytime. <-- anchorman humor
I have used a hoist and ive used jacks. I like dropping the motor to the floor rather than using a hoist to lift it out.
