That's a weird problem. Sounds like something else is wrong. Try to turn the motor over by hand (BIG socket on the crank bolt) and see if it goes relativly easy.

thanks for the bumps, im able to pop start it with the clutch, so i know the motor runs. someone tried to tell me about a voltage regulation box or something that comes off the distrubtor? never knew something like that existed?

Sounds like a faulty ground or connection with the starter or battery.

Well, if your mechanic was good, then he would know that 12v being present on the starter terminal does NOT mean it will be present when you actually try to start up....meaning, if you've got a bad ground, this will cause a pretty severe voltage drop, which takes away available voltage for the starter.

So aside from cleaning up the grounds, the next step would be some voltage drop tests on the starter cables.

If you've tried 3 starters and everything else is fine I'd start tracing it from the ignition switch.
