Wheel Bearing or Caliper?
I have a 98 Civic DX Sedan, and this weekend I noticed that when it is only in reverse it makes a metal on metal noise out of the front end somewhere. I am not smelling burning brakes, and I am not feeling excessive heat from out of any of the front wheels...which in my past experiences is a sign of a stuck caliper. I can start to feel it in my steering wheel when I back out of somewhere. I was told at one point that my right front wheel bearing was bad, but turned out to be a bad rack and pinion. Would that cause that noise only in reverse? I was under the impression that it would "howl" like that all the time if it was bad. If you guys could give me some direction on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Wheel Bearing or Caliper?
My mechanic suggested the clutch, it started slipping slightly on Saturday...but have not had problems with it since then. The clutch feels fine! It has started acting like it has lost a little acceleration over the past week. Any ideas?

If the wheel bearing is just starting to go you might not hear it howl yet. To check if the wheel bearing is bad, jack the car up and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and jiggle it. If there is any play in it at all it's a wheel bearing. I've never heard of a bad clutch only grinding in reverse.

Re: Wheel Bearing or Caliper?
yea, goldsy...i am still lost here. I have heard everything from the spur gear in the transmission to the wheel bearing. I just had the rack, outter tie rods, and the upper ball joints replaced about a month ago. There is no movement in the front tires at all. I am not thinking anymore that it is the bearing. I looked on my lunch break and see that the right front caliper is wet, not leaking but wet. I think that my caliper is hanging up when my car is parked more than 30 minutes. I have been wanting to check the brake system anyways, just do not have a location to do it...yard is grass and driveway is dirt.

Re: Wheel Bearing or Caliper?
took it to a local diagnostic center, they said that it was not the brakes. still going to get it off the ground when it warms up a little and take a look for myself. i dont really trust the guy that diagnosted my car, he was real quick with the brake system. did find out that my evap system was shot to hell though, they said that the 2 way vavle/solenoids on the tank and all the evap lines were all sorts of rusted through and corroded. that explains why my car keeps throwing the P1457 code when i scan the ecu.
