Whats up with this??
Scenario:
I have a 94 Civic EX(MT) and my gf has a 98 Civic DX(AT). I have an intake and exhaust. We were both dead stop at a redlight and we both took off. I was flooring it and shifting @ like 5600-6000K. I got ahead of her thru 1st and 2nd gear. By the time I got to 3rd, she just flew past me w/an auto, stock, and nonvtec d15?? DX motor at that.
I am like WTF??? I just got the car a few months back. I have a code 41. Is that harming my stock performance right now? Also my car backfires between shifts.
I have yet to change: plugs, wires, sythetic oil/oil filter, fuel inj. cleaner, and fuel filter.
Any ideas??? I am working towards an LS swap w/turbo by the end of this year.
I just wanna know whats up with my EX vs. her DX. Shouldnt the EX win hands down??

Well, this might be one of the reasons that she was faster. Also, the displacement difference between your engines isn't that great... 0.1 liters.

thanks for the input. how do u check stock timing anyway? where should it be? I "possibly" could have an exhaust leak. my car is real low and i have hit quite a few bumps. i doubt it though. I need to just get my tune-up done anyways too. Hopefully that will make a big difference.

For further investigation of your engine's performance problem, we mandatorily need pictures of: A, your car, and B, your girlfriend. Specially B, though.

Re: (Civicse)
i just want to put this out there. why do people race their stock civics like they actaully have power? and then complain when they loose? even after you fix all this stuff, your still going to be slow. maybe you'll beat that dx, but thats like winning a race with a manican and feeling a sense of accomplishment about it. that was long i apologize.
as for your timing, you need a timing light, hook it up. warm up the engine to operating temperature, turn off all accecories like a/c and radio etc... then point the timing gun at your crank pulley. you'll noticea line on the pulley and a mark on the cover. they should match up. if not loosen the three mounting bolts on the sizzy and slowly turn untill the lines match up. thats the jist of it

Thanks again for the input. I never dealt with setting timing. I've seen it done but never understood what exactly was done. Thanks for getting me the jist of it. I can go figure from there. Thats all i needed.
As for me "quote unquote" racing my stock civic, obviously that proved a point of telling me that my engine is running up to par. I've searched around and found that people didnt have thier o2 sensor connected too and it didn't hinder performance. I'm still getting 31+ mpg.
Thanks guys for the info. Greatly appreciated!

Thank for being a waste of bandwith, ***.
To the OP, you should take care of that CEL first.

get the O2 problem fixed and you will get better mpg and more power.
running without an O2 either runs the car rich and ignition retarded all the time, or they have a tuned ECU that has custom maps and settings to allow them to run like that.

well no one actually knows that its your timing. it could be cause i don't know your car. but from what you said up there "by the time you got to 3rd" sounds like Vtec wasn't engaging. and its probably because you haven't done oil change on your car and change all the other stuff yet. Vtec depends on oil pressure. low oil pressure = sometimes NO VTEC. if you have a stock Ex that isn't much faster than a Dx, its the Vtec that helps the Ex. i used to have a 94 Dx wooped those 2004 SI. just keep your car in good shape and she should treat you good.
