What about the 1.7L (1668cc) motors in the new 2001+ civic? I don't know if it is d series or not but it is a 16-Valve SOHC VTEC motor w/ 127hp @ 6300, 114lb.-ft. @ 4800, and 9.9:1 compression ratio (according to honda.com). The D16Y8 has 1.6L (1590cc) 16-Valve SOHC VTEC motor w/ 127hp @ 6600, 107 @ 5500 and 9.6:1 compression ratio (according to autos.msn.com). The 2001+ has slightly better torque and displacement. Am I missing something as to why the D16Y8 is better? Please elaborate why if it is better than the 2001+.

i always thought that the 92-95 si's were stronger then the 96-00 ex's.</TD></TR></TABLE>
according to autos.msn.com, 92-95 Si has 1590cc, 125hp, and 106lb.-ft., 9.2 Compression Ratio. So comparing the two the 96-00 ex is rated 2hp & 1lb.-ft. higher, and a 0.4 difference in compression ratio. Oh, and its OBDI

Re: whats the strongest japanese single cam motor.... (ek four)
the d16y8 (96-00) has 2 horsepower over the Z6 (92-95).
The d16y8 has a better combustion chamber design, and more compression. However, it is belived that the Z6 has better a better flowing head.
I did a lot of research before i did my set up in my 92 Si, and i went with a low-mileaged D16y7 bottom end (96-00 Lx and DX, 250 bucks) and the d16z6 head (came w/ the car, re-built it, cleaned out all the carbon and replaced the valve seals). The result? 15.6 @88mph on street tires and a full interior. Nothing to brag about or anything, but its nice and punchy for daily driving

That is a better engine yes, but it's harder to swap than a H22. The returnless fuel is tricky as hell, the smog equipment is a major PITA and the intake manfiolds are composite plastic.
It's not an engine you want.

Oh yeah, one more thing. You can convert a D16Y8 to OBDI.

aren't the z6 and y8 rated at the same hp to the crank?

Re: whats the strongest japanese single cam motor.... (iluvjasmine)
F22....sohc...150hp, 150tq.... as hard to swap as an H22.... woo hoo !!
I have a straight d16z6, 125hp stock... the Y8 has 127 stock, but the head doesnt' flow as well up top...
I ran a 15.3 in my hatch w/ just I/E on the Z6... it's already OBDI and has pretty good tq for a sohc...
