Default What's the motor with you?

Someone should let us all know how to ID the motors in our Hondas. For example: My owners manual is gone. And the grime on the engine block prevents from reading the motor. Its a 97 Civic EX. 1.5 or 1.6 is what I'm after. V-tech?

You could..
A. Clean the block
B. Wiki what a 97 EX comes with
C. Your block isn't going to just read 1.5 or 1.6
D. V-tech does not exist in any Honda

OK obviously new to hondas... but you have to educate yourself..
Google works last time I clicked and used it.
Wikipedia gives the same result.
Funny thing is that this question will be asked again.

ok here is how you tell when you clean the grime off it will say either d16 or d15 if its the d16 its a 1.5 if its a d15 its a 1.5 but if its vtec it will say vtec on the valve cover.
if you bought a honda with a swap in it it can say many dif things on the block stamp. k, j, h, f, b, or d series it will always let you know what the displacement is on the block. all in all if it doesnt say honda or have a honda emblem on the motor then its not a honda motor swap and if thats the case post the pic and we will help you out then.
Do your own research and if you cant figure it out we are more than happy to help.
have fun and welcome to the club

Maybe you should go buy a new Prius then. I hear they come with a fresh pack of AA's, no dirty/"oiley" work required, just plug and go.

Holy **** i LOL'd so loud xD you know that laugh that makes your stomach hurt? LOOOL, to top it off i was thinking the SAME THING, and was going to comment almost the exact same comment until i see yours. If you are scared to get "Oiley" or "Dirty", get a prius, Go to walmart, get some tampons, and continue to stay nice and clean.

If you don't want to get grease under your manicured nails, why do you care what kind of engine you have?

I always thought Hondas had the most easily distinguishable engines, It's not that hard to tell apart a d16y8 from a b20b or a k20a... In your case Google will always be your personal friend...

The thing is even with Wikipedia and google it really doesn't matter what it says is in the car, because with all the swaps (engine or head) these days it really could be any engine. Even if your block says D16Y8 some idiot could have put a Y7 head on there or vice versa. So bottom line is you need to research AND get your hands dirty theses days. Besides this is a tech forum and is much like school, so it includes tech info and tech exercises that need to be put into practice. The FAQs above are like a K-12 education to get the basics to get you ready for college (posting a thread after you completed your basic education). After this you can go for further study in a masters program (answering and solving others issues). Then finally you can get your doctorates by doing your dissertation or thesis (doing write ups, DIYs, how to's and tech articles).

Some day I hope to have my dissertation in a complete B series Transmission rebuild. I hope the peer review process will go smoothly as well when submitted to "The Honda Journal".

Spray this on your block stamp:

Then please go turn in your man card for not wanting to get a tiny bit of grime on your dainty hands.

Why do I feel like you made this account name, just waiting for this exact scenario to happen?
