Might I ask why you are buying a code reader? doesn't autozone rent those out for free or something? and why not just do the paper clip trick? Is it a gift for someone else? Either way, BUMP for you.

I feel most decent OBD II readers are going to be around $100 or above, as some can do a little more than just retreiving the code. Actron and Innova make decent readers; they make different levels of readers, with the more expensive ones having more options and being able to do more.

I have an Innova OBD II reader that comes with software that can be updated. Not every reader can be updated for new codes.

If all you want is something to retrieve codes, even Walmart or Kragen sells a stripped-down Innova version for around $40-$50.

The ebay one you linked is not CAN compatible; like the link said, and you may not be able to use it with 2003 and later model year cars.

My recommendation is to invest in one you can at least update the software. I feel it is better to have your own, instead of having to rent and return a reader from Autozone everytime you need to read a code (in my area, they do won't do a reading for you, only rent it).

OTC is a good obd2 code reader, but it comes with a price tag or at least the one i used back in my auto tech days was pricey.

i have a auto-xray scanner from carquest that i got for a helluva deal since my cousin works there....

I did go with the Innova OBD II reader and I am very impressed with it. I would recommend it for sure.

Thanks tech8!
