R-12 is the old refrigerant that is not being produced anymore because of environmental issues. Even if you find it, it will be pretty darn expensive. R-134 is the new stuff; it does not cool as effectively, so it requires different A/C equipment. It is possible to retrofit an R-12 system to accept R-134, but, once again, that's gonna cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $600-800.

Now, last time I was at a car parts store, I saw a recharge kit for around $40 that claims to refill either system. No idea what that's all about, probably just a R-134 tank with fittings that can go to an older system.

My car doesn't even have A/C, so I can't really help you there But, I found this page on the "other" forum that tells you how to find out which type you've got: http://www.honda-acura.net/for...46508

Scroll down a bit for the worthwhile replies; somebody said that the switch from R-12 to R134 happened in 1993. Also, I read somewhere that there is stuff you can use instead of R-12 in the older system, called Freeze-12. If you have a newer car, just go with R134 though.
