It depends on your power goals. If you're looking for over 500whp, you're better off with a b-series. Otherwise, a d16 will be fine.

Ok, I can already tell that this thread is going to be full of bias. If you suggest either one, provide a reason. Otherwise, it's not going to help him any more than "I like mayo more than mustard".

Been doing some research on it because I have a 00 Civic... with a d series non vtec.
D i heard has better mid range torque but it will cost alot more money to get the same amount of horse power out of a b series motor. You have a DX so the exaust is a little bit different.. well it is on my car.. Dont know about a 95. the cat is on the downpipe. Costly to replace that. (I am kinda wondering if I can use a header on that motor and relocate the CAT?) Correct me if im wrong though. The mid range torque will help for turbo lag?

i honestly think since your in this boat. i will give you my insight..... find a vtec single cam for cheap and boost it... that way, you have fun with it and if it blows. your not screwed . then once your on that balla status and you know more about motors. you can really go from there.

B series...why? largely due to the fact it's got way stronger rods, plus a dohc head flows 30% more air stock to stock from a sohc head.....need i say more?

A k20a can produce more power than a B. Also, a 454 can produce more power than a k20a. Should he swap that in instead?
It all comes down to cost-benefit analysis.

B-series is DEFINITELY better for boost. B-series motors are MUCH stronger internally and have better rod ratios for less cylinder side loading than the MUCH more undersquare D-series motors (1.54-1.84 for B, 1.52-1.62 for D). Also, even if you have a relatively modest power goal in mind, because B-series motors are more powerful to begin with, less boost will be required. In other words, a 300WHP boosted B is going to be MUCH more reliable than a 300WHP boosted D. And EVERYTHING about the B-series powertrain is beefier. So you don't have to worry as much about clutches, transmissions, axles, etc as you would with a boosted D.
The ONLY reason you hear SO much more about boosted D is because it is cheaper. But how often is cheaper actually better?

It is when you're pressed for cash.
I'm not arguing that b-series engines are superior because they certainly are. However, not everybody can afford the cost of the swap in addition to the turbo kit. If you already have a b-series engine, then yes, reverting back to a d16 is a waste.
Like I said before, it's all cost-benefit analysis.

couldnt have said it any better myself. If your going to turbo a d-series because its cheaper, well then you should stay away from doing anything to it. Do it right the first time and dont half *** anything. B-series hands down better to boost. People like what they can afford. Most of the time thats turboing a d-series

on boost, anything boosted is good, all depends on the kind of power ur looking for. I would prefer K20 boosted but depends how deep them pockets are.

I don't know, I'm more a fan of the most whored out question being the "H or B" argument, or the "all motor vs boost" argument.
Though yes, this is another popular one and you are right.
