What a way to kill a weekend!!
Decided to venture into the world of tranny/axel swaps.... uh man, what did I get myself into!
Started Friday night around 8pm, just did the major unbolting.. linkage, intake piping, sensors connected to the tranny, starter, ground straps, loosend all major mount bolts and tranny bolts, removed the UCA/spidle bolt and Z10 bars..
Didn't finish all that like like 11:30pm, yea it was 3hrs, but this was the most complex job i've doe since like a coilover swap or removing my turbo, so I was taking it very easy and very slow.
Day 2 starts around 6pm with the help of a very experienced tech friend of mine comming over for the major surgery. Removed all the tranny bolts, poped out the old axels, then finally off with the old tranny. Prep'd the new/used 5G EX tranny, bolted the bastard on. Then my buddy gets a call from his wife telling him to go home because she wants to spend quality time w/ him right thenand there, so of course my friend, the nutless wonder that he is, "umm yea sorry but I gotta run, just do this-this-n'-that and you're done... well thankfully his broher stuck around to help me finish it off but man, what a pain in my ***.
And the real kicker, after busting my *** to put it all back together finally, I turb that key and "Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr".. starter is spinning free and not turning the flywheel even though I replace it exactly as I removed it! BAH!!! Oh well, looks like there's gonna be a day 3...
Few thing to keep in mind when doing suck work yourself:
1. Friends are INVALUABLE when extra hands are needed
2. WD40 oWNs!
3. Make sure to unbolt the gay tin foil dust shield before attempting to pull tranny from motor, it'll save you 20 mins of aggrivation!
4. Honda starters are a royal pain..
5. WD40 stilll oWNs!!
6. The slave cylinder boot is the single most difficult piece of rubber to install on the earth..
7. Air tools.. mans TRUE best friend!!!
8. Newspaper on the ground = MUCH less cleanup work!
9. DSS axels are hardcore baby!
10. Next time.. I'll pay somebody to do this
Photo's from my painful journey into the dark world of mechanics:
My poor raped engine bay
Another shot.. can't even tell it's an ACT anymore, I liked the bling bling yellow!
Bastardly old tranny!
My syncro nightmare savior!
Shot of the busted 110k mile original axels. Although this photo doesn't do it much justice, the DSS units are far heavier/sturdier than the originals!
Well that's it, i'm off to bed now, if you don't hear from me for a couple days.. i'll be in a comma

try 13 trannys.
2.5 hours to do a tranny swap, but I've had practice.

BTW, you think having one Civic tranny in your garage is bad. Try 2.

Are those the DSS stage 1 axles? If so, you will snap them, snapped both of mine within a week of eachother, they had 0 drag races on them and SNAPOLAH. He is going to fix them but I have to ship them back to him first. Just a little warning.

Good to see the SOHC has not been abandoned, it was looking a little bleak the other day. Good luck with the "surgery".

i wanted to ask.......how would you know the difference between trannies i.e. ex, cx, dx
basically, how would yo know you got an ex tranny by lookin at it.
