Go to a steep hill and try to drive up it. If the car just sits there and the engine revs, you need a new clutch. If it goes up, it's not the clutch.

In layman's terms:
"If the revs shoot up when you launch and/or shift and then slowly fall down as if they are 'catching up' to what your car is really doing, your clutch is slipping."
