Consult the folks at Greddy, if you want to really get a good lifetime out of a turbo d series.
However, I can suggest plenty of stuff, but I don't know what the application is (psi, aggressiveness of the build, etc.)
I dunno, there's forged internals like pistons and arms, high performance bearings, you should sleeve it to try and minimize damage to the cylinder walls, so on. Check out turbod16.com, I'm sure they'll have much better answers than I have on your particular question.
PS-I'm going turboD soon too.

Change the timing belt. If the motors got some wear on it might wanna change the head gasket and VC gasket too.
Do a leakdown test.
Plugs, wires, rotor/cap

Well, what are you looking for in the kit? Greddy kits are being sold on eBay. Just the basic (kit incl. e-manage, does not incl. intercooler, bov) for about 1300-1450

^^ Classic!
Umm, if you dont think your engine "can take a full kit", then you might not want to boost it at all. Your car is going to need the full kit, ie. mainfold, turbo, injectors, IC, charge pipes, BOV, WG, oil lines etc. If you do some reading online you can piece together a "full kit", homemade, for about 1500 dollars and still make good power and have it be a reliable car. Just read man, you are going to need a full kit and a tune.

for prep work i would recommend:
cometic head gasket
arp head studs
valve cover gasket
spark plugs (NGK)
wires
thermostat
other than that you just need a turbo kit, you can choose to buy a complete kit, or piece one together yourself.
i personally pieced my kit together for my d15b.. it is on 10psi and runs great.. having it re-tuned shortly on 12-14psi..
anymore questions just ask!.
turbo d series ftw.
