WHAT NEXT? couple q's on a SOHC build/clean-up..
I was gifted a Z6 motor, only missing the oil pan, told it was making noise from the bottom end, I mailny just want the head to do a mini-me on my D16y7,
anyways, I started to break it down, 'cuz I want to clean it and make it look like new! plan on cleaning and painting the head and all the bolt-on's.... I was told I could just pull the head and start swapping them, well this is what it looks like, what is my best method of attacking this, shoudl I start getting new parts, ie new valves spring etc... the top side looks nice, but when you look underneat (on the valve seat area it is pretty dirty, can I just clean this up or should I break it down and get it port and polished? I'm planning on going all motor at first, then later boosting this is my first motor build so please go easy on my lack of knowledge
the motor
under the cover
the valveshot
and the blockshot, this is were you can really see the nasty build-up
again thanks for any help....

Through the head into a stem machine and see how it looks when it comes out. (thats what i would do if you have access to one)

take out the cam and rocker assembly, and make sure that there isnt any excessive wear on the cam lobes or rocker pads. You can take the head to a machine shop and they'll clean it up for $10 or so. Make sure you put some sort of lubricant on the steel parts, so they dont rust.

luserkid...
steam machine? -- can I duplicate that at home? steam it with hot water and degreaser?
x743x
take out the cam and rocker first right?
are they just going to "steam" it, what should I be asking them, to clean it, and can I do the same thing in a parts cleaner (you know big tub with a scrub brush and a pump spraying cleaner)
thanks for the quick responses, just wanna make sure I understand them

yea, take out the cam and rocker assembly. It's best to store the cam upright, if the gear is still attached. If not, you can lay it flat.
Different machine shops clean stuff differently. Just bring them the head, tell them you want it cleaned. Should be no more than 10 or 15 bucks.
Make sure that you have some sort of rust preventitive on the cam and rockers, like wd-40 or oil.
