i don't think the oil light would come on for that i think you have a bad oil pump or your sending unit couldnve taken a crap, did you even take off the valve cover and look at it? if so the cam is loose how it still running? well not very good im guess because it prob isn't even touching any of the rockers

a loose camshaft ??????????
that's a good one. !!!!!
if your oil light is on AND your engine is rattling, probably low oil pressure has caused something to wear out and rattle. It may indeed be your camshaft, but if you have low oil pressure and a rattle, I'd think other things have been dammaged by it too.
Listen to the lower end with a piece of small hose, Check your actual oil pressure with a gauge before condemning the whole engine, but if it is low or none existant, you might as well rebuild or replace the whole engine as the cam/cam bearings run in an oil bath and surely would be the last things to rattle if the oil pressure dropped too low to lubricate it.

The amount of oil you have and oil pressure are mutually exclusive until you have almost no oil at which point the oil pressure will drop due to not having anything to pressurize. If the light is on, and your engine is rattling its probably time for a new engine, oil pump is probably bad and you've spun bearings due to lack of lubrication. It doesn't matter if you had lots of oil, it doesn't do much good if it just sits in the bottom of the oil pan. It is possible that the oil pressure sending unit is bad too, but i highly doubt this where the engine is rattling.

A loose camshaft?

Maybe it's ur muffler bearings as well.

Do yourself a favor, pull out the camshaft, and beat your friend's dad over the head with it a few times until he starts giving reasonable advice.

EDIT:
If the cam was lose it wouldn't even be touching the rockers all the way - your engine would most likely stall out way too soon after starting, or not start at all.

I've never seen a "loose cam."

Though your oil pump or something important is probably shot if the oil pressure light is on, so you're probably best off looking for a new engine anyways.

The "rattling" could easily be a spun bearing. Or any other side effect of having no oil pressure.

yeah, with no oil pressure, pretty much nothing will work and if it miraculously does you would most likely end up locking the engine up anyways.

just bite the bullet and replace it

I predict you'll either drive a rod through the block or it'll seize. If you have some sort of free towing through triple A or something you could just keep driving it and get them to tow you home when it blows. Just order a low mileage JDM D15B vtec, they drop right in and only have around 50,000 miles on them for not that much money. Just make sure its the OBD1 vtec version.

I got mine for $683, that was the final price after tax and shipping. Figure in another $150 - $200 for some maintanence parts (water pump, timing belt theremostat). And then figure out your labour bill, i put my engine in myself so i can't give you any figures there.
