Default What the hell is a "Resistor Chip"?

I have been looking for used mods for my '94 civic. Somebody has offered me a "resistor chip". I have never heard of it before, does anyone know what they are or what they do? He said he would sell it for $25 and it would add 15-20 hp.

That's crap, from what I know and have heard, it tricks your map sensor into believeing it is colder outside that it really is. Don't buy it man.

Search, I THINK it might be the chip that keeps your top speed at bay. not sure. but that's what the govenor does too.

WTF?

Tell them they don`t know what they are talking about, don`t buy it, and go to the 7-11, buy yourself a 12 pack of beer knowing you got something more useful with that $25.

i'm a skeptic myself but i know of someone who actually got it and they say it works... and TrickHonda might be right when he said something about the top speed. This guy said he has no more rev limiter so go figure? I don't think it adds 10+hp but I think it tricks the ECU into some kind of performance benefit.

if it no rev limiter, then its no use to you because you're not making anymore power unless you engine has work in it.

so the power or lack there of from the higher rpm isn't beneficial compared to the bottom of the next gear?

The only way to "add" 15-20 (or more) is to get more fuel and air into the motor, ie: header, intake man.,cam, head work, etc.... No little $25 part will add horsepower. Some parts reclaim lost horsepower (hot ignitions) or move the power curve around (chipped ecu), but if you expect to get more horsepower you'll have to spend more than $25.

don't buy it my friend bought one for his mr2 worst 25 bucks he spent ever after he installed it the car ran the same. For that 25 bucks u could do something better like buy burritos for all your friends, go watch a movie, or buy some beer like the other guy said. Heck the possibilities are endless

they also sell something on ebay that plugs in to your IAT (intake air temperature) sensor, but all it is a 25 cent resistor that you can buy at radio shack that fools your ecu into thinking that the air entering your engine is colder, therefore changing slightly fuel/timing curves to compensate for the lower temperature. It does have some positive effect in hot areas, and has been proven to help, but not worth 25 bucks.
