I've done some looking around and it seems that HX is more than just a trim line - I'm new to Civics. Generally, my perception is that this was a more fuel efficient model than the rest of that year's line (1998) or really, any other model year.

BTW: Honda sure made a bunch of different trim lines back then - I was impressed.

Anyway, looks like it had a lean burn engine and taller gears in the tranny (my is a 5 MT)??? Did the HX have any unique engine internals? Is this correct/did I miss anything?

I cannot tell you how pleased I am with this little car! Sure would like to learn a bit more, if any of you could chime in.

PS: My son turns 16 in two years and I think he'd look good in this car, if I don't keep it for me...

D16Y5 engine, high mpg, lean burn, wide band O2 sensor, EGR system, low emissions.

Also the auto version had a CVT trans as well. The trim level was sort of in between a dx and ex, it had power windows, no sunroof. I am thinking standard AC (could be wrong).

Not it's not... I had thought so too untill up I saw one that didn't have it and it just had the blockoff instead of the a/c button. I can't remember exactly the year of the car I saw but it was 96-98. I would say most came with it though and at least 75%-80% of them were 5 speeds at least in my area anyways.

Cars like the VX and the HX are examples of how far ahead of the curve Honda was when it came to fuel economy back then. When the HX was released, gas was cheap, and no one really noticed it. Now that gas is expensive, and these models have proven to be very reliable, they are highly sought after vehicles.

Were they ever. The VX especially. If it didn't absolutely need to be there it wasn't in the VX, no side moulding, passenger's side mirror, manual steering, 5 speed only, super light alloys, coraplast trunk floor...

great - thanks for the info, btw: my first tank 'o gas went 39.42 mpg. Pretty much city traffic.

I have both a 97 and 99 and they're really good cars for what honda designed them to be. They are pretty much just like any other civic with a few differences mainly being the roller rockers, lean burn, and the cvt if automatic which btw was a terrible transmission, both of mine are 5 speeds for that reason. I normally get 40-43mpg in the 97 but can only get a high of 37mpg in the other one due to having the wrong ecu that someone had replaced with the cali spec version.

Back about 10 years ago when I had my HX it had a moonroof. I can still remember putting $5 of gas and going 130+ miles.

I have never seen one in an hx only the ex's because it was standard equipment in those.

No HX came with a moonroof, if you see one that does either someone put in an aftermarket sunroof or someone swapped an EX/Si roofskin and OEM moonroof assembly onto it.

That is what I was thinking. I do however wish that Honda would have given it cruise control but then we wouldn't have the nifty shift up indicator but then that must've only been 96-98 because the 99 is blocked off where the light would be.
