WHAT DOES MY HEAD CODE MEAN!?!?
I have been doing re search for countless hours between google and honda forums and i cannot find the answer anywhere. The head i have is a Single cam and i thought it was a Y8 head But the stamped number on the front is P2J-5 with a 96 on the right side. Everything is leading towards a D15b 3 stage vtec head. However ever one i have come across, the stamp is P2J-1 or P2J-6 or P2J-04. No where in any pictures, or archives or the stamp numbers is a P2J-5 listed. What does the 5 in the code mean? And what exactly is the head i have? Am i trying to over analyze this? I have the wrong vtec solenoid on it and i need to find out which one i need to get.

The 96 is the year it came off.
BTW, I found that in a google search. 15 seconds

98 EX D16Y8 Auto-----P2J-5
If you had a D15B 3 stage head, you would have two vtec solenoids. That would be a lot easier to see than a head stamp.

Re: WHAT DOES MY HEAD CODE MEAN!?!?
hello everyone! im a newly registered member and i am also a noob to forums so bare with me. im in the same boat. i just bought a 97 civic ex. he said he put a used low mileage motor from attarco.com in it. the ex should have the D16Y8 in it but mine in stamped D15B. i only have ONE solenoid. the head is stamped P2J-4 96. and he said he put his intake manifold from the original motor on it. is this the 3 stage vtec? and if so why does it only have one solenoid? also the motor feels very week, not a lot of power. the vtec does kick in at 5700rpm. however, going from a stop, the motor sounds fine until it hits about 2500rpm then it starts making a really strange noise. takes forever to get to 5700 rpm then the vtec kicks in really hard. did this guy Frankenstein this motor?

also it doesnt have an EGR valve. shouldnt there be one? is this an OBD1 or an OBD2 motor? (my dipstick is the front or the motor, not inbetween the exhaust manifold.)

97 EX D16y8 5spd-----P2J-4 --- "97" stamped on the right
97 EX D16Y8 5pd-----P2J-4 (95 stamped on rs)
99 EX D16Y8 5sp------P2J-4
Three stage VTEC (VTEC-E, D16Y5) would have head code P2J
So you have a Y8 head.

mine says p2j-4 with 96 on it though. im guessing it would still be the y8 though. any how i took the car to a smog shop today and the car is not smog legal since the guy put the D15B in a car that should be a D16y8 -_-. i left him a message saying he better take the car back or else im taking him to court for selling me a car with an illegal motor in it. i just bought the car friday.
