what does Honda do when servicing a throttle body?
I don't have the money to get my throttle body serviced at a dealership/shop, so I was wondering if any of y'all know what I should do to perform the same service myself. The gas pedal is so muddy/sticky/jerky and it's super annoying. I've tried cleaning and re-greasing the spring, cleaning around the butterfly, etc., etc., but I guess the last thing to try is a full servicing. I'd imagine it'd involve taking the whole t.b. off and from there... (?) Any feedback? Thanks guys, I really need to rid this problem from my Civic.

take the tb off.... that's easy. clean it out with a scraping tool...... again, easy. remove the plate if you want and give it a thorough cleaning. i used a lot of denatured alcohol and rubbed everything until it sparkled like new.... also, easy.
all in all a very easy fix to do...... why would you need to have the tb "serviced"? unless you broke something, i guess.........

What honda would do is laugh and take your money. From the sounds of it there's something sticking in your pedal. Clean and grease that sucker up. Every pivot point of the gas pedal assembly should get cleaned and lubed up. I had the same problem with my 00Si. Cleaned a lot of the old grease out got rid of an ungodly amount of crud on it, re-greased it and it works good as new.

Go to an engineering firm and get them to modify the butterfly and housing also get them to look at the TB and check for uneven wear ..this will be your best option!

yeah I tightened up the cable a bit, because there was a bit too much slack, but that didn't do anything for the stickyness, just improved response.
how would I go about cleaning and lubing the gas pedal assembly? I've never done that before, but it can't be too hard right?
thanks for the help so far guys.

we take the TB off and spray Throttle Body/Plate Cleaner in the opening of the TB where the air goes through (make sure you get the back end too) and on the butterfly. Make sure you get all the carbon off...that is all

thanks again guys. I'm gonna try to clean/lube the pedal tonight, and then do the t.b. cleaning this weekend. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

I got under the steering column near the pedals tonight and felt where the pedal meets cable at the firewall, moved it in and out some, smudged the tad bit of grease there around. Depressing the gas felt like back to normal, but soon went to muddy/sticky again, so I think I need to grease that hole and the cable (??) I'll do that tomorrow and see if it fixes the problem. I also bought carb cleaner and am doing a thorough cleaning of the throttle body soon.

gas= the best parts cleaner.
Lube up the throttle return spring with some WD-40 and call it good.

Re: (UnitZero)
someone told me you should not clean the throttle body because it has a special coating inside, like some Fords do. personally i don't believe it. any comments on this?

Re: (an2ny888)
yeah, to my knoweldge, that's not true about the coating.
and yeah, don't use wd-40 on the spring, it's properties are such that it will "eat" away any grease already on there, and in a few days you'll be back to a non-lubed spring regardless if grease was there originally or not.
If I have some extra gas, I'll use that as a cleaner, thanks for the tip.

lol!!!! ok take of your in takes and open the butterfly on your throttl body... then sick your fingr in there.. you are proly gunna come out with a finger full of black goey ****.... that my friends is a carbon build up!! .. it often makes the butterfly stick... it can afect throttle respnse but not much... what you can do is... start our car... and spray a little bit of carbuerator cleaner in it keep revving your motor as you are spraying it in... dont use alot just enough to clean out the TB...

Re: (ekb18cCivic)
thanks for the feedback. I've heard that spraying the carb cleaner into the t.b. while it's on the manifold can cause engine problems, so I'm gonna completely remove it, clean with carb cleaner, and then put it back on and re-attach my short ram intake. I'm also gonna toy with the firewall hole the cable goes through, cuz that seems to be causing friction making the pedal muddy also.

don't rule out the cable... i've seen cables get gummed up inside (how, i dunno) but it's unlikely... that would be the last thing i would toy with...
you don't have to take the tb off but if you do then get a new TB gasket.... be sure to scrap the old gasket off and clean the surface of the ITM and TB before reinstallation.
don't use a dremel tool or anything, just do it by hand... a sharpie wrapped in a shop rag (or sock, hehe) should do the trick.... just keep srubbin until it's shiny....
