Default What do you guys think of this tranny setup

Okay, after many hours of calculating here's something that i've come up with:

as you can see, i used a b16 2nd gear for the first gear, a b16 3rd gear for the second gear, a b16 4th gear for the third gear, a b16 5th gear for the fourth gear, and a ls 5th gear for the fifth gear.

now yes, that is a fairly steep first gear, however, i think that it would work out fine. By doing this you would get the acceleration advantage of a b16 tranny with a higher final drive without having to take the infamous 80mph hit. Lemme know what you guys think

and heres a chart that i made

What is the point of a first gear that ends at 56 mph? Have you ever tried starting in 2nd gear?

Not to mention you can break a shifter fork downshifting into 1st gear too quickly, imagine how hard it would be if first was that long.

its wishfull thinking but u can't just interchange gears like that. There are two shafts inside a transmission. each has a gear that makes up each gear(1-5). 1st and 2nd are part of the input shaft and countershaft which are not removeable. to change 1st and 2nd u need all new shafts. Thats why some custom gear sets only have 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. The other gears are removeable but they all have their places on the shaft. U'd have to do some modifications to the gears themeselves to move them around like making them larger or smaller.

u can change 1st and 2nd by changing the countershaft.

At least its a technical post...

Someone at least give some better ideas to achieve something close to what he has come up with(if it won't work as he has posted it)...

Why would you want to do that?? Making the ratio's longer seems like a stupid idea unless you've got a torquey engine that doesnt rev [ie not a honda engine].
My friends CTR has the standard CTR box with a 98spec ITR final drive and it's awesome, especially with the 1.8L b16b

Agreed. You would need a real torquey motor for those settings to be worthwhile. But then again do it and post your quarter mile resuts. You might prove us wrong but it's not likely.

read this:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by thebense &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">as you can see, i used a b16 2nd gear for the first gear, a b16 3rd gear for the second gear, a b16 4th gear for the third gear, a b16 5th gear for the fourth gear, and a ls 5th gear for the fifth gear.

once again. If you get a high final drive, it makes all your gears shorter. It makes your first gear become extremely short, almost to a point where it's too short. It also shortens your 5th gear so that when you're cruising on the highway, your rpms are cranking higher than you'd want them to be.

think of it like this. A 6speed b16 transmission with a high final drive and the sixth gear would be the LS 5th gear. This transmission setup that i came up would be just like that, it it was possible. The only thing is, is that it wouldn't have the really short first gear which I'm assuming that you wouldn't need anyways.
