What do I need to do here?

If I'm correct, it appears the rubber covering the CV boot has split, and now I have grease spread all over the place. What is the name of the part I need to fix this, and what do I need to do exactly? Here is a pic below... Thanks!

oh, and the car is a 96 Civic EX, not sure if that makes a difference.

better yet go to checker, orielly's, auto-zone , pep boys, etc.. and get two new axles and they will have a lifetime warranty so the next time it happens you just go get a new one for free! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif I did and it just paid off like two-three weeks ago when I was attempting a stage 3 burn-out I snapped an axle. wheeeew!
btw they run about $60 each. / with cores.

if the boot breaks doesnt that have something to do with the axle not being in such great condition?

94CoupeEJ1 12-30-2004 04:12 PM

Re: What do I need to do here? (99hatch)

When the boot breaks you have the opportunity for dirt to get to the CV joint. They won't last long with dirt in them, that is why some recommended he put in new axles. I always replace the whole axle when the boot goes.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif Best bet is to replace the entire axle...I noticed my cv boot was torn when I changed back to my winter wheels a few weeks ago. Hondas have been cursed with this problem. I've changed one on every civic I've ever owned and a buddies. Not to hard. Good luck. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

replacing the axle would be better then just replacing the rubber boot. happened on my dads car while he was driving it.

yea I would just get a new axle it will be like 75 bux with your busted one for a core. Then no worries about sand and stuff in there from the rip.

yeah
buy a new axle. and avoid the potholes.

Re: What do I need to do here? (Kaneda)

If the axle clicks when you turn - it needs to be replaced.

If it does not click - all you need is the CV boot

Re: What do I need to do here? (areyoujealous)

do it right or dont do it at all

lifetime warranty axles are around 60$ VS 20 for a boot. dont be cheap.

areyoujealous 12-30-2004 08:05 PM

Re: What do I need to do here? (Kamin)

dont fix what isn't broken

CV boots are $10

if the axle makes noises, then it needs to be replaced

haha i remember that "stage 3 burnout" thread https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

so if the CV boot, axle, or both breaks next time, you can just get a new ones for free...

if you tore your boot, espically that bad and you just replace the boot, the axle will fail eventually. do it right, or dont do it at all.

Re: What do I need to do here? (Kaneda)

thats the cv boot that ripped

But i would defenitly recommend buying a new axle from like auto zone or something
there guarentee for life and who knows if theres something wrong with your axles

quick question....sorry to thread jack.

What causes a boot to tear??? Is it that the rubber just gets dried out after a while and the natural motion of the axle tears it or what?

yeah hitting shit load of pot holes helps too, obsesive turning, reverse donuts, lowered cars. Just get a new axle, you will bust them alot if you planing on launching that d series alot, especailly the longer one. Autozone lifetime warranty kicks ass.

Re: What do I need to do here? (ABK)

Replace the axle.

b16h22a 12-30-2004 11:24 PM

just take the axle out clean all the grease out and inspect it if there is crap in it or if it is damages then replace it. if not then thuroghly clean it,re grease it and install it again there is no point in pissing money away when you don't have to
