here is the short of it.
The Oil catch can is part of the PCV system, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation.
It is used to filter out contaminants normally returned to the crankcase by the factory installed PVC system. Having a properly working PCV or Catch can system pulling a vaccuum of around 19 inches is critical to proper engine performance, and cylinder sealing.
