I need to do a dmv inspection for my car(96 civic coupe). I want to know what do they really look at. Im from california and I know they look at the vin number in the engine bay and on the dashboard, but wut else??? I need to know asap by the end of this month. Let me know if you have experience this in California.

you have to buy matching vins at the dmv to put on your hood, fenders, front and back bumpers. and you need to make sure your tail lights are working. is your car a theft recovery?

Was it for a salvage to rebuilt title? If so then they will ask what made it salvage and if u have the receipts for what was fixed.

the OEM labels under the hood...if it aint on they will think its been hit in the front and refer you to the CHP...i had that issue awhile back.

They do a vehicle verification.They check for vins on firewall,dash and door jamb.Brake and lamp are not done at the dmv.

i'm assuming your car was a salvage title rebuilt, meaning that it was stolen from the previous owner, he rebuilt it and sold it to you...if this is the case, then turboc53 is right...the will check for the vin on the firewall, dash, doors, fenders, hood...if any of these pieces were replaced from the accident, you will need a receipt to show that part is legit...depending on the CHP officer that checks it, they will not pass the inspection if you are missing receipts....i suggest gathering up all the paperwork that you have, contact the previous owner to ask him what he replaced on the car and make sure you have a receipt for that part...if he replaced something with a non-legit part w/o receipt, you will have to buy a new/used part to put on and have proof of it...i went through hell and back with my hatch so i hope this helps...
