It depends on which versions of VTEC and i-VTEC you are talking about. There are no less than 3 different versions of VTEC, and 4 completely different versions of i-VTEC.

Yeah, since we all know that sound is an oh-so-important factor of engine performance.

so getting back to the OP and actually trying NOT to make this thread filled with a bunch of stupid *** posts...

1 obvious difference is the sound. and something like i-vtec has a good powerband throughout all rpm's whereas vtec has a certain point where a lobe on the cam opens up allowing more air intake/fuel combustion which = more power

How did I know that was coming

It's old. Seriously. It was funny several years ago; now it's just annoying. Give it up.

So sorry....I seemed to have angered the poster below with my simplified version that had some mistakes in it. See my post further down for more info on the difference.

That's very inaccurate. Or rather, straight up wrong.

<sigh> Give me a half hour or so and I will write up a quick run-through of all the different forms of both VTEC and i-VTEC to clear this up.

No, it is getting old. All that needs to be done is to answer the guys question. You don't have to make some smart *** comment just because some one doesn't know any better. Grow up.

sorry....I made a mistake in how i wrote my original post up, however, I was merely attempting to point out the main differences between the two (ie. that VTEC deals with the exhaust cam and i-VTEC deals with both cams). To go into great detail on how each type works as well as going into technical explanations will be fruitless as the original postermost likely does not know how either work. Nonetheless, I'm not about to get into a knowledge pissing match with you. I concede....you are smarter than I.

Reference:

go to this link for info on the different types

i-VTEC

i-VTEC introduced continuously variable camshaft phasing on the intake cam of DOHC VTEC engines. Valve lift and duration are still limited to distinct low and high rpm profiles, but the intake camshaft is now capable of advancing between 25 and 50 degrees (depending upon engine configuration) during operation. Phase changes are implemented by a computer controlled, oil driven adjustable cam gear. Phasing is determined by a combination of engine load and rpm, ranging from fully retarded at idle to maximum advance at full throttle and low rpms. The effect is further optimization of torque output, especially at low and midrange RPMs.
