Ok so I purchased a 96 EK coupe a while back and the previous owner had a noname header welded to a straight pipe exhaust.

Now when he did this, the header had no hole for the o2 sensor....

So the o2 sensor is just hanging in my engine bay right now.

What is this causing to my car?

I just ordered this header.



Now it doesn't look like my o2 sensor is gonna reach all the way back there. Which o2 sensor should I purchase to fit my car and this header?

you get a o2 sensor harness extender...i know theres some one on here who sells em, go in ebay and search..itll make it so you can use your stock 02 sensor but it will reach..

you can always cut the wires and extend them. or you can purchase and 02 wire extender like this one from password jdm

If my shop can do electrical work they can probably just make an extension for it aswell right?

that is usaly for a wideband 02 on that header
do you have a CEL for the o2 sensor? if not i would just take out that hangno2 sensor and leave it be

I get a CEL light but im not sure if its the o2 sensor or not, it doesnt wanna read the code whe I use my scanner.

Won't my car run shitty if I take off that o2 sensor?

if your ecu is chipped or modified you can disable o2 sensors...
if not then your car will just run a tad too rich or lean. check your spark plugs

If you have an OBD0 ecu, then no the car won't run sh*tty with no ecu. But with a OBD1 or 2 then yes, it should run pretty horribly without an O2 sensor.

Yeah I have an OBD1 P06 chipped ecu.

if it idles fine and no CEL then its been disabled and your fine, cheers

Actually it doesn't idle good, after it warms up and CEL comes on it idles weird like small hop between 1k-1400rpm.

So im assuming its not disabled.

that could be alot of stuff though..you need to figure out for sure what the CEL is

You should slap the O2 back in the bung on your new header.

That bung you see on the header is not for wideband but for the stock O2.

Your car is not a race only right? if so then the O2 is very important unless your making like 500+whp then it might not be useful but for a normal car the computer needs to make fuel and ignition adjustments to maximize fuel consumption.

You will get many opinions about cutting the O2 however you have to make the final decision. Even if your vehicle is tuned, your tuner will not be able to take into account for the temp differences, the altitude differences and so on so most tuners enable the O2 after the tune is done. During tuning the tuner of cause the O2 is disabled for well tuning purposes, if the ecu is making adjustments then it will throw the tune off while tuning.

Once the car is tuned however the computer will make minor adjustments to ensure maximum efficiency.

as soon as I get the new header in im gonna put the O2 sensor in there. this is my daily driver and I have been noticing my car consuming gas more than usual.

im gonna go see if they can pull the codes at the auto store.

Im gonna take my car to to the muffler shop and have them make a hole for the o2 sensor the guy said they can make it with a special bung.

whats to lol about? CRX T-si gave a very good explaination. the stock o2 will make adjustments to a chipped ecu if it is running in closed loop, just like the factory ecu.

good plan. and if the o2 is plugged into the wiring harness and just hanging then that would explain poor driveability. the sensor is just reading dead air (lean) so its probably trying to add as much fuel as possible, causing your issues

Yes a stock O2 does make adjustments to a modified ECU......I don't see anything funny about it?

A modified ecu is just another ecu with different parameters set from stock and the computer still make minor corrections.

You might want to read up a bit on the subject, it might help you to better understand.

Well I went to the muffler shop today.

It seems not only was the header o2 sensor not on, but the o2 sensor that goes on the cat isn't on either. It was just zip tied.

Im wondering if the p73 jdm ecu I had didn't check those o2 sensors and when I changed to my chipped p06 is when my problems started.

Either way when I get my header im gonna get the o2 sensor put on the header/testpipe and put on new iridium spark plugs.

The JDM P73 also does not require the 2nd O2 because JDM cars only use one. Since this is a Vtec ecu was the PO6 chiped for it?

Don't worry about the second O2 but if you have a hole in the cat for it then just stick it and if you don't then find something to cover the wire hole for that O2 in the tunnel.

If your problem is only evident after you put in the PO6 then it might be the chip in it since one was a Vtec ecu and now you have a Non-vtec ecu (assuming that it's not chipped for Vtec for now).
