What determines where hood pins are placed on a hood ?

What determines where hood pins are placed on a hood ?
On carbon-fibre hoods I sometimes see the pins on the top of the ridge on the hood of 99-00 Civic hoods. And sometimes they are on the lower teir of the hood closer the edge of the hood. What dictates where they must be placed ? Personally I like them better nearer the outside.

basically, you decide because those locations are generally where there are already holes that you can run the bolt through.

Its where put your studs that come up to put the pins through if there aren't already predrilled holes.
If there are predrilled holes, just make sure you put your studs there.
