what is chipped ecu?
1) is it reprogramming your stock ecu?
2) or you buy programmable ecu and program it?
3) where do you get the program from?
4) is it worth to chip ecu on stock engine?

it is using a stock ecu, but loading a different program into the CPU, instead of the stock one. It is possible to convert the ecu completely back to stock, if you don't want it "chipped" any more.

Re: what is chipped ecu? (allmotorEG-SI)
when my car was stock as a test me and my friend switched our ECU's (his being chipped) and with that in my car i redlined higher and was a little bit faster. If u plan to mod ur car go for it, if NOT why waste ur money?

is it tru that every mod you do is gonna affect your ecu differently? I mean...everytime you do a different mod, you have to get your ecu re-done to accept that mod?

not really. If you are having custom programs created for your setup than you would need a new program to the make the most of the mod. If you are buying "Mugen" or "Spoon" ebay chips than no you will not. Most generic programs like teh "Mugen" or "Spoon" just dump tons of fuel, change timing maps, and raise or remove the redline. very true, that is exactly what my friends chip did. (Mugen Chip)

I sell DIY kits or just chip. but most ECUs will require extra hardware in form of resistors and extra chip.
chipping a stock motor is waste of money IMHO, gains of 2-5hp can only be obtained at which the cost, simply outweights the benefit.

It depends, I know that for my old bimmer, we would get preprogramed chips that took into account the possibility that the car in question was going to have basic bolt-ons done.
Also, where is a good place to get a performance ecu for my GF's 98 civic ex? I have trouble trusting those ebay "performance chips".
Also, I know that for our bimmers, we could also get reprogramed tranny chips that were set to shift at different setting i.e. hold a gear longer and so on. Thanks in advance and sorry for jacking the thread.

well, I think a chipped ecu compliments an intake and exhaust, and a header, if you wanna spend another ~200 bucks.
I also think running an OBD2 car on a stock program OBD1 ecu makes more power.
and to any interested people to "chip" an OBD2 car, you need to buy a conversion harness + an obd1 ecu, so it's a little mroe pricey, then just getting your OBD1 ecu chipped.
I know one place that does OBD2 chipping, but they are basically cost equiv of getting a harness and ecu, and that is a more versatile solution.

So for my GF's 98 Ex, what OBD-I ecu should I convert to? And once I find that ecu, where do i get it chipped? You also said that just converting to OBD-I would yield increase, how much increase of hp/tq?

Re: (Knightmare69)
You would need an OBD2a to OBD1 conversion harness, and a chipped P28 are your best bets.
Butt-dyno responds favorably. No hard numbers, if you find someone local enough to let you try the product first, you can make your own decisions.
Do you have at least intake/exhaust?
-PHiZ
I can get all this stuff, I'm in CT.

Re: (PHiZ)
I have actually heard that you lose a little bit of power going from the obd2 ecu to obd1, but still the benefits of obd1 far outweigh the 1-2 horsepower loss from getting the ecu.

I have at least an intake working on an exhaust but still making repairs to the car before anymore mods. I do have a Random Tech High Flow Cat. I'm still deciding on either the Apex-i WS Cat-back or a custom Apex-i N1 or Borla unit. Also, will the conversion past emissions? Thanks in advance.

Re: (bearboy80)
Well, you need a burner, even if you have a program... so that is a certain minimum bar to entry.
And there is a way to set the ecu back to stock, trivially, most emissions stations just do a code check these days for OBD2 equipment, no sniffer needed....
