ok i searched and no one has make a check list or anything. or explaned what needs to be done.

1. ive checked the wires running to the speedo sending unit. 12v to the sending unit. how do i check the unit its self. also i have tried another sending unit still no luck.

2. checked b10 vss wire to ecu. has 12v their. but i have no idea if that is good or bad. how do i check continuity?

3. inspected speedo and replaced speedo. both of me gauge clusters look great. i have an EX and a DX neither work. is their a way to check just the speedo?

oh and is their a fuse? everything else on the clustes work just no speedo.

ok this is in a 92 civic dx sedan. i bought the ex cluster to change in and i did it durring an engine swap and after the swap it didn;t work so i replaced it with the stock dx cluster and nothing. the dx speedo did work before we did the swap. so did i damage something durning the swap? just need a check list to test everything before i take it to the dealer.


update checked vss it has 12v to it and it is giving out 6v. b10 on ecu has 6v but the speedometer is not getting any volteg it has its 12v power and neg but no signal is getting to it. help me out.

and what exactly do u mean speed sensor? the sedning unit on the tranny? or the speedometer? and how do i check if its bad?

i don;t have a manual thats why i posted this thread need exact info. thats why its a check list. so others can use it and learn. their has to be things to check to narrow down to what is bad. thats all i need. also battery light came on and then tunred off after lik 3k and then stayed off could be connected to the speedo problem or it could just have a loose belt.

could be your VSS (veh. speed sensor). i think mine is bad too but its not totaly broke, the speedo just works when it wants. thats why im swaping out my Dx cluster to an SI this weekend, if that dont fix it then im goin to change the VSS(i need the tech. anyway)

well i have tried 2 vss sensors im reading that their may be a fuse??? this could also be why my battery light came on. im ganna check over all the fueses again tomarow and check over all of my vafc wireing and change my map sensor.

how can i test the speedo or the vss sensor?

If your alternator is going out and your battery is dying, it will definatley make your speedo go crazy.

ok so what wires do i check to see if their is a short and what am i looking for?

like do i want 12v constant to the ecu from the vss? also what should the reading at the speedo be?

speedo jumped like 3 times went to 40mph and then died again? any sujestions? it just sits their now. help me out.

also im getting a map sensor arrer code 3 using my vafc. any sujestions their?

your cable my be broke or about to break. i had an 88 prelude, and the cable was all twisted up down where it connects to the transmission (engine?) anyway it broke off down there

no cable electronic ok i narrowed it down. the vss is getting 12v powe good ground and is sending out a 5-6v signal like it should. ecu is getting this signal in pin b10. what wire connects to the speedo its green and grey at the speedo. how does the ecu and the speedo connect? what pin

ok the 3 wires on the harness connecting to the vss black one is ground, yellow with blue strip is the 12vsorce and theyellow with white stripe is the signal to the ecu, cruze and speedo. my ecu gives off 4v to this line. anyone know why? when i turn the car on it goes away. supoesedly honda technition told me it should have 12v to the ecu, speedo and cruze. well when i turn the car on and its running it has 0v nothing. any sejestions? ill get a list of info like what has power at which key posision to help others trouble shoot later down the road.

first pic is the vss sensor plug off the engine harness. the yellow wires then run to the secondpicture. this run of wire is the spot for shorts.



this is the diagram i am going off of.

when the ignition is on 2 clicks to run and the car is not running i have 4v at b10 but thing is its from the ecu. when i pull the wire from the ecu it has no volts.

when the car is running this line has no power. and neither does the wire from the engine that runs to b10. so i think i have a bad relay, or connection somewhere. my line from b10 to the speedo is good. and my line from the firewall to the speed sensor is ok. 2 more joints to check.

well everything works.

when i had my tester connected to the signal output on the vss every clip on the gauge cluster would complete the circut. i rechecked all my connections disconected reconected the alternator plug. then everything worked.

battery light has stayed off. speedo works. and no code 3.

hope all this information can help people trouble shoot their speedo problems.
