am about to buy a jdm d15b engine. the shop will start it up to show me its in running condition. what should i look for? i've seen some guys open the oil filler cap and put their hands over it, why do they do this? also i've been told to look at the dipstick and see how high the oil has splattered. any comments?

If you can check the compression. Look in the oil cap for buildup of oil ( oil rarely changed). Look for the discoloration on the cam holders..

open up the oil filler cap and shine a light in there. the cam caps and everything should be a nice smooth color (cant think of the color name lol). if its nice on the inside the oil was changed on a regular basis, if its all varnish (i dont think thats the color im looking for) looking or dark colored on the inside that jdm boi didnt change his oil alot.

well if your buying from a business reputation is what i look for. if its from private party well im pretty scetch, and i would check it out pretty good, although it always isn't true if a motor is really really clean then there is a chance that its a good motor, but its not always true

untuned

if the motor is still in the car do a compression test.. if it's out in a yard or something do a leakdown..
