What causes a O2 sensor to go bad???
Hey guys so i had problems with my o2 sensor a couple of months ago. The car was bogging between 3,000-4,000 rpms so i replaced it with a oem one, and the whole time it was going bad it never coded. Now it has been 2 months and the o2 sensor is starting to go again its boggin between those rpms again. What causes the o2 to go is it running to lean, to rich, to much this or to much that.
Why is this going bad so soon???
thanks Spencer

I think it might be going to rich cause its harder on the sensor. But also im running rich as hell and i had to switch my cat. twice and never the O2 sensor. Heres a free bump then.

Running too rich or lean will f- it up.
Running rich will foul it, or clog it up and it will not work anymore.
Running lean will cook it.....too hot and you will fry it.

no you don't you have two.
You won't see the other one, unless you pull your cat out.

Pull your plugs and see how you are running. Black = rich white = lean.

you have two o2 sensors.
why did you suspect it was the o2 sensor in the first place, if it never threw a cel?
even if the o2 sensor in the cat crapped out, it wouldn't bog down, but would throw a code (this is happening to me right now). swapping it with the other one would at least narrow the problem.
one of us is confused.

Well first off it is very typical for a car to bog between 3,000 and 4,000 rpms when the o2 is going bad. I know this cause i replaced it and i was good to go but now its right back to the same ol thing

There is something not right with the car, causing the incorrect fuel condition...presuming that is the problem.....you can check the emmissions out of the tailpipe with an old smog machine. It should tell you if NOX or HC/CO2 are high. That would indicate if you are rich or lean.
adjuststing the timing is probably the way to go, although I am not sure how bad it has to be to mess up an O2 sensor.
He does not necessarily have 2 O2s, he did not say what car it is. If it is 95 or older, it is true he has only one O2 and it is highly possible that he fouled a sensor and it would not throw a MIL....

maybe it's not the O2, maybe it's your ignition? i had a simliar problem with my car and it turned out to be a loose wire. hard to say what your problem really is when we're not there to check it out. but it can't hurt to guess.

i was going by this. i guess it could be swapped in and converted obd1, but somehow i don't think it is.

its in an EG hatch which means it would only have one o2 sensor... i would try to get a dyno baseline just for the A/F reading and just do it under normal driving conditions... this is a good chance to check and at the same time do a couple little quick fixes to get her runnin better...

Have you checked the operation of the o2 sensor with a scope or voltmeter? Honda o2 sensors very rarely cause a pronounced running problem. There are other conditions that can cause bogging.

Re: (MrHeeltoe)
actually if he has a 96 and up then he has two o2 sensors, one around the exhaust manifold and one on the cat. i have a 99 ex with a cel light on and it is a code 41 which comes from the second 02 sensor and its not getting hot enough or it is bad.
