Default What causes "pinging"?

when i hit vtec @ 5500, i hear some strange noise coming from under the hood. it sounds as if something is rattling or vibrating. ive been having trouble with this and have yet to figure out. ive been told that its "pinging" in the motor that maybe caused by detonation but it was put on a smog machine and said that there is nothing wrong with the emissions. the mechanic also said that there is no detonation within the motor. just confused.thanks.

If it is "pinging" then retard your timing abit.

My guess is a heat sheild in the exhaust system...prob. around the cat.

pinging is from pre-ignition or detonation and is caused by combustion at the wrong points in the engine cycle which creates sound waves that vibrate off the cylinder walls. At the least your engine will run less efficient and gas mileage/performance willl suffer. If severe enough you can crack the cylinder wall, piston, etc.

time for a tune-up my friend. Get a new timing belt and then get the timing checked. Timing belts can stretch you know. Put in new plugs and run a higher octane gas if needed. Think about taking the car and having the injectors pulse cleaned as they could be gumming up and their spray pattern could be erratic which can also lead to this.

nicely put. it is also caused by a lean condition or lack of octane. extra load on the engine say ac on on a very hot day will cause it as well.

yep, forgot to mention those. another culprit is when towing or if the car is running excessively hot (which can be coolant related or from the lean condition).

all kinds of things can cause it but I mainly mentioned the tune up as that's about 90% of the time what's wrong with the civics. Lots of miles, hard driving by the kid driver, a lot less maintainence than what it should be given since the guy is spending all his money on apc stickers and a-pillar fire extinguishers

you advance ignition timing to stop valve ping not retard it

whats is valve ping?
and to reduce ignition ping, yes you retard the timming. if it is advanced to far and you dont have enough octane to support advanced timming, it will ping. therefore you need to retard a few degrees to get rid of ignition ping.

My first instinct was to do this HAHAHAHAHA lol what a dork.

But then common sense took over and I realized you made a simple mistake...you know like righty-tighty...lefty-loosy, came out like righty-loosy...lefty-tighty.

Please make sure you know what your talking about before you post. Misleading information sucks.

would this problem be the reason why my car sputters when im trying to get out of 1st gear? on takeoff (normal driving), my car would feel like its choking then catch after 2 or 3 sputters and take off. thakns for the help fellas.

that could be anything from fuel problems, to ignition problems, to not clutching right on take-off.

Are you using premium fuel (91 octane or greater)?

This is a B16A, right?

Try throwing in some injector cleaner into the tank...if it solves the problem you'll know in a like one minute after starting the car.

right, thanks. would you think that a valve adjustment is in need also?

I put injector cleaner in my tank and it caused it to knock?

Hmmm. Just out of curiousity did you have the correct fuel/cleaner ratio?
