If you just want a DD and not worried about power, you should be able to get a fairly decent non rusted 92-95 hatch for 2k. It will be bone stock but hey, built is better than bought anyday of the week.

Well my neighbor bought a crx and dropped a JDM d15vtec. For the same reason you say, too much mileage on a new car. He got the car with a bad motor(blown headgasket and cracked head/block) for 1000(Everything but the motor was nearly perfect, even the interior). He did the swap for just over 700. So for 1700 he has a very good daily driver.

Buy a shell and drop a D series engine in it.
I bought my EJ8 shell for 500 and dropped a newer d16Y8 in it, cost not even 1300. Then my dad just bought a 91 Si Hatch shell for 500, body in great condition. He's fixing it up for not even 1000.

Re: (SovXietday)
you can still find someone's old grocery getter civic under $3000 here in jersey atleast.
Good luck with your search and if you find one you can always use the rear fender rust or leaky hatches to drop the price.
