If he stole it and you bought it, it's still not yours.
EDIT: Sounds shady. Tell him to go with you to the DMV and figure this out. Then have the police meet you there.

They lost the papers?! You probably should have walked away right there. That said did you carfax the vin? you don't just loose the papers to a car, you could be looking at a stolen vehicle.

Are you retarded? Do you not know that its very possible you've bought a stolen car? You will goto jail for it even if you didn't steal it.

Dude, i think its $25 for a 1 month subscription. Thats pretty cheap insurance and if you can't afford the $25 you can't afford a car.

ya man NEVER buy a LOST PAPER WORK car!
that has always sounded shady to me! if the cars worth any money then the seller needs to get off his @ss and file for the paper work! did you at least get a BILL OF SALE with his ID info?
if you already bought the car then you could be screwed if its stolen! call a cop or something with the vin number and ask them to run the car and find out if its stolen or not... if its stolen then give them all the info you go and hope they can bust the guy and then you can TRY to sue him and get your money back but its still not looking good. cops wont care to much if your foolish enough to buy a car with no paper work!
cross your fingers its not stolen or take it back to previous SUPOSED OWNER and either demand your money back or demand that he get the paper work if he wont do either than tell him you want to call the cops and have them come out to to check the vin number! and first of all if you want to be smart.... RECORD THE WHOLE CONVERSATION!!!!!!!!!!!!! from start to end!
and of COURSE hide the recorder test it out with your buddy or something to find a good spot to hide the recorder! then at least you can get him on tape telling you everything and when the cop pulls up pull that sucker out and smile and play it back for the cop!
at least this way YOU wont get busted if the car is stolen!

no papers=risky.... but another risk is selling a stolen car with no papers..... either way its stupid for both sides. just go to your local dol and ask them, just bill of sale is all you really need and some info and they'll mail it to your house.
