Default what am I doing wrong, vtec oil leak

HI, 2000 civic ex vtec, The vtec sol is leaking, so far I have cleaned both surfaces, 1st time I cleaned the surfaces with acetone and applied a skim coat of rtv blue. and an gasket from orielys. It leaked after 3 days, steady drip when running. 2nd time (today) I cleaned all the surfaces with acetone, did not use rtv, and an actual honda gasket. Still leaks. I verified the solenoid is leaking by dusting baby powder around the valve, its definitely the valve.. Both surfaces are surgical clean. Both times I torqued down to 8ft pounds, Do the solenoids warp by chance?
Thanks for any all replies
Steve

Instead of crappy blue rtv, cleanup your surfaces again and put a coating of Loctite 30558 gasket maker on the gaskets/seals and torque your bolts down to the 8 ft/lbs again. Let sit and cure and then see if it leaks. I doubt it will.

I would use Hondabond before anything else. Regarding the warping or such, anything is possible but before going out and buying one, give Hondabond a try.

Which Hondabond would you recommend, there are several?

This is the best, although I've been using the BMW gasket maker recently since I get it for free. The Hondabond has been the only gasket maker that has kept my '70 VW Squareback leak free in the past 2 years.

Am I correct that some Ultra Grey fills in for all the variations of HondaBond?

Or is it Gold Bond...

That information is in the post I supplied the link for.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/tech-m...d-use-3188036/

There is a few Hondabonds that are now an equivalent to Permatex Ultragrey.

Thats the devil of it though. According to the honda dealer here (st louis), the gasket should go on dry. On the other hand I dont care if I have to use elephant tusk to seal this thing,
Im getting some hondabond today and will report back
Thanks

Yeah, we're aware it's supposed to be dry. We also are aware it's a very common leak and the fix is the addition of some gasket maker with the new gaskets.

When the Honda Bond fails, try the Loctite 30558. It doesn't do well with gasoline but is quite fine dealing with oil. With it's pressure ratings, it will have no problem holding back the oil. The vtec solenoid doesn't see gasoline so it's fine for the application and the heavy duty nature is normally overkill for our applications. A perfect candidate for this impossible to seal leak.

Are you sure your leak is at the gasket interface to the head? They can also leak where the parts of the solenoid assembly are attached together.

Replace the v tec solenoid valve, it should fix it.

I think there is also a drilled oil passage nearby in the head. The outside end of the passage that was necessary to drill it is supposed to be permanently sealed up by the factory driving in a steel ball (much like you see in carburetors) but it could leak.

I went to the junkyard and got another one. After sanding it flat/smooth on a piece of glass and sanding the head surface to get a fresh surface I used The Right Stuff by permatex for a sealer, I have to report that after 100 miles no leaks. Time wil tell
Thanks all
Steve

May be dry, but what about oil stains.

Just went and priced out the two vtec gaskets for the 5th gen here at the dealership. 73 bucks before tax just for the two special o-rings.......

Needless to say, I'm going to the junk yard and comparing 6th gen to 5th gen vtec gaskets and if they are the same, grabbing some from the latest year I can find and then using some quality flange sealant on them to fix my leak.

Stupid pricey up here in BC (Bring Cash) Canada.

Just a follow up, Its leaking again. I now have the loctite 5109 and am looking for a helicoil for one of the bolts. Its a VERY slow drip so I will tackle it next weekend weather be damned. Im not sure if it is leaking because of a bad seal or because one of the bolts felt like it is trying to strip. Either way when I take the solenoid off Im going to heli coil it

Donīt use any gasket sealant, i have been working on Honda cars for 15.years hear in Iceland and never have i seen a sealant used and almost never seen a leak. Use a new gasket like this one Vtec Solenoid Gasket | eBay .

new gasket each time. put the solenoid on a flat surface (window) to make sure its flat. cleaned and polished all mating surfaces, torque wrench to 8lbs, took a straight edge to the head to make sure its straight.
