what affects gas mileage? and what to check?
the best mileage i can get out of my em1 has been 27mpg.. and im SURE it can get better than that. im looking into getting atleast 30+mpg. my gas needle fluctuates A LOT! is this normal?
i got 27mpg when not hitting vtec on a whole tank of gas, and most of the driving was highway miles. that sounds pretty bad to me. i changed the fuel filter, the plugs, used some bg 44k fuel injector cleaner, i checked the cap and rotor but they looked fairly new. i do have brand new ones from the dealer though if you guys think i should replace them anyway.
i bought this car used from a sketchy *** HONDA dealership, and i dont think it was taken care of very well by the previous owner. would timing or valve adjustments have a big factor in all this?
its only got 42,XXX on it, however i dont think its running to its optimum potential. i drive a lot, having to go to school and work, and miscellaneous other trips, i would just love to get the best gas mileage possible. sorry for the long post. ANY suggestions are welcomed. thanks in advance
[edit] also use 93 octane and replaced the pcv valve [/edit]

If you want all of the causes, it would put your "long post" to shame. Could be air filter, fuel filter, tire pressure, dirty fuel injectors, dizzy, plugs, wires, or many other things. Start with the obvious and work your way up the food chain. Good luck!

i use 93 octane. i just installed an inject short ram intake. replaced fuel filter with an oem unit. used fuel injector cleaner on a full tank of gas. the cap and rotor looked fine. bought some new v-power ngk plugs. wires looked new so i didnt replace them.
tire pressure may be something that i will have to look into.
anyone know about valve adjustments and timing? will they have much of an effect on gas mileage?

I seafoamed last Saturday and don't feel any difference or gas mileage improvement...My luck sucks.
27mpg doesn't sound too bad to me. If you're really looking to get that extra 3 miles, lose some weight (car that is)

I get 36 mpg on regular gas. Just keep your foot a little lighter, have the right air pressure in you tires. The air conditioning kills gas milage in civics. The gas guage fluxuating is normal I guess my done it as long as I can remember.

In an EM1? I have no ac or p/s, and I get no where near that at anytime, and it's not like I'm modded that much either. And I take care of my car very well at that.
