Default Wha's going on with my motor D16Y8, HELP!

Last night i pull into my driveway and i see the car producing tons of smoke from the bay. I look at my oil temp and it's Off the scale Way up there above H.

This morning i go down and check the car in daylight and i see the cars ran out of Coolant in the reservoir, real weird seeing is how you don't just burn away a ton of coolant over like 3 months, which was when i last refilled my reservoir.

I thought it may have been my Radiator leaking coolant and possibly the coolant was touching the hot motor outside causing it to smoke.

So I refill the reservoir with coolant and i turn the car on to see if that temperature of the motor rises to H again and sure enough it did, not only that but tons more smoke came out.

I got out to locate where the smoke was originating from and it was not coming fro the radiator in fact it was coming from under the distributor, under the head but above the short block.

So if u look at the transmission housing u can see fluid on it that wasn't there this morning but may have dried up last night.

You guys still with me?

So I'm now under the assumption that maybe i blew my head gasket.

I'm confused because the smell of it is coolant, that sweet syrup like smell, that's what the burning smells like. From looking at it, it may be oil ill pen point it with a pen so you guys can help me determine what the issue it.

The green arrow is pointing to where the oil or coolant is sitting on the transmission housing.
The blue arrow or turquoise arrow is pointing to where it's coming from, right where the head and short block connect.

Can anyone tell me if this is a blown head gasket? Maybe something bigger or small and how i might go about fixing it if i weren't to take it to a shop, or at least give me an idea s to what I'm dealing with?

I'm stranded until i can get this fixed.

Thanks H-T appreciate the read and the assistance in advance.

Thanks for the speedy response Markley

That's not my car btw i have a stock d16y8..

Anyone think it may be anything other than the head gasket? just so i don't put all my eggs in one basket and it turns out not being just that alone.

If you can visually verify that the leak is coming from between the head and block it can ONLY be the head gasket. Combine that with the fact the car is overheating I'd say it's safe to say it is the head gasket. Lucky for you the head gasket itself is only $35 or so from the dealer although you may need additional work done to install it properly.

the head gasket isnt to bad of a fix. you need to pull the head off and replace the gasket its probably a good idea to send the head out to get resurfaced since its been overheating. check out some DIY on head gasket replacement

also is ur coolant a normal color or does it look a different color. check the oil in the car most of the time a blown head gasket will have a milky looking oil due to the coolant mixing with the oil

You guys are all the Man! thanks for the observations. As for the mixing of coolant im not sure it looks fine and green to me. Hypothetically speaking what would that mean if the coolant and oil mixed? what would cause that to happen?

Head gasket is leaking and your coolant that is supposed to cool the head is now mixing and getting into your cylinders. That's why the oil will look milky to you.

^^^ basically said it all. if it is mixing then it is the headgasket.

Yes, Definitely not my motor in the pic. Actually I'm just gonna be changing out the long block. My motor has 220k miles on it, I do a lot of long distance driving I'll need a refresh.

Thanks for all who contributed to this thread, I'm really appreciative of it.

Motivates me to really start taking care of the next motor. I'd had so many issues with the oil pans on this motor than i can see why i blew the head-gasket.

The next one I'll keep it in tip top.

Also, with that..Does anyone have a link to Installing or Replacing a D16Y8. I'm certain on how to do it but I'd love a reference w/ pics. I have a helms, that may do.
