wetsanding paint?
 

mods, feel free to move this to appearance/costmetic if this isn't the right place for it.

So I took my car to Maaco, and they did an OK job (for what it cost), but the shine is horrible (it's really blurry). When looking up close, the paint looks like it's textured, not very smooth, so I believes it just needs a good wetsand and the paint smooth out and look nicer.

What kind of sandpaper should I use to wetsand it? Grit? Any other suggestions on what to do with my shitty paint? Thanks

i would use a 1600 or 2000 grit and go at it remember you cant put the paint back on... and then cut and buff it till it shines

Off topic, but how much for the paint job and who did the prep?

Basically, start with 1500 or 1600 and do a second round with 2000. Some paint have clear coat premixed so the clear coat gets separated after the paint dries. Just sand it lightly I guess.

the good old fashion Maco orange peel........ yeah I would take it to a body shop and have them wet sand it and buff it since it is a maco paint job... not trying to knock you but maco paint is not that great at all (you pay for what you get)... all they do is knock off the clear coat on your stock paint and paint over the old paint. Therefore the paint isnt thick at all and alittle bit to much elbow grease and right threw the clear and paint. I have been painting cars for about 5 years now.... but you can take my word or trust your judgment what ever you choose wont hurt me any. I am just trying to help you out.

so 2000 grit? i really can't afford screwing this up, and i can't really bring it anywhere because i dont have the money to pay anyone...

just soak the sandpaper in water, lightly sand and then buff?

Here's what you are going to do.

first, sand the vehicle using water and 2000 grit. You use the water to wash away the dust, so, either, you dip the paper in a bucket, use a garden hose or a spray bottle.

Remember that if the orange peel is to coarse, you may have to sand with 1000 to cut it down and then move up. Also, use a light to provide a sheen so that you can see better.

Next, tape all edges since paint is thinner and you don't want to burn through the paint with your buffer. You can buff the edges by hand after.

Next, buff using a buffer (not a drill) a foam pad and some burnashing compound. THen shine will come back out.

Remember though, a whole car, can take a couple of days to do, so arm yourself with patience.

1600-2000 grit will be ok, but it is very important that you take your time, and cointinously wet the actual paint, as well as the sand paper in hand. It would also be a good idea to have a high-speed buffer available with the appropriate chemicals on hand.
