Default went to track tonight, please flame...

ok, i have a 94 civic coupe with a jdm b16a. 210 cylinder pressure all across. iv only had it for a couple weeks so i have been monitering how much oil and coolant it burns. right now it doesnt burn that much, a very small amount but its also been less than 600miles, so its hard to say.

here are the symptoms...pulls good from 2-4000 on a roll but from 4-7000 it really slows down like it almost bogs. there is absolutly no power. vtec kicks in at 5800 all the way to 8200. but it just makes a different noise. it doesnt pull harder like my old gsr. you cant feel it kick in. and then from about 7500 to 8200 it pull really good

i ran a 16.652 with a 2.516 60ft at my best. BRUTAL. its a jdm b16a (p30 ecu). the motor is completely stock. i took off the airbox and muffler other than that its stock. oh also i have a walbro 255lph because i want to go turbo soon. but i want to get this running better first. i dont have a cold air intake i just put some cotton over the throttle body. its 2" exhaust from the header back. and i have some konig helium ultra lights wheels with toya tires (195/50/r15) anyways i thought i should run alot better than this. so whats wrong??????

here is what im thinking please let me know asap. if you have other suggestions let me know as well.

1. new plugs and gap them to spec? i dont know whats in there right now but they looked good, meaning burning evenly. what plugs should i get and what should the spec be?

2. timing. would this be a possibility? what is spec on the timing (degrees BTDC?)

3. valve adjustment. ill take it in for this as i dont want to mess anything up. what should the valve clearence be?

4. gummed up 02 sensor? would it be dirty or something?

5. dirty fuel injectors?

6. would it be a good idea to use a 0 guage ground wire all my main grounds (3). i heard it helps rev faster because the dizzy ground will have a larger spark.

thats all i can think of sorry for making it long. most of you probably wont read anyways.

"oh also i have a walbro 255lph because i want to go turbo soon"
can you say too much fuel for that poor B16. that would do it.

"i dont have a cold air intake i just put some cotton over the throttle body."
wh-wh-what???

1. doubtful, it would do it all the time
2. it could be, I think it's 16* but check to be sure.
3. could be, but doubtful. check the service manual for specs.
4. fuel mileage would in the crapper and it would idle terrable, so doubtful.
5. it would starve the engine, certinaly wouldn't pick up at 7500.
6. doesn't help. the stock grounds are fine as long as they are clean and in good condition.

is the P30 chipped?

p30 is not chipped. why would the fuel pump have anything to do with this. its will going to pump what it needs. its not going to be running any richer. isnt it still going to flow the same as the stock one but its good up for more flow when it needs to?

Doe you car feel that its missing (not firing on all cylinders)? First thing I check is your catalythic converter. See if it's clogged. Did you also adjust your valve lash or timing (stock is 16 degrees)?

*update- I have a blowned headgasket right now and its still running around 14.6-8's

Yea defenately check your cam and ignition timing and also do a complete tune up. Anyways, I hope that solves the problem because thats not even sohc status. Stock d16z6 in civics run 15.5-16.

Stop that Sxxt with the cotton over the tb that right there robs a ton of power... I tried the pantyhose over the intake during a dyno session and it absolutely killed the high end... The surface area of a 2.5 inch intake pipe by itself is less than 1/10th of the intake area of a cone filter... Put your intake back on and see what happens...... Stock B16's dyno just like a d16 until after 6500 then you get a little more on the topend...

Yeah man, something there isn't right. B16 coupes should easily be running 15's...even if the motor is stock. A nice tune-up never hurt anyone. Good luck with it

That sounds about right-the USDM EK si's are running in mid 15s range stock, im sure an older coupe should be doing better than that. COrrect me if im wrong but that was what i think they run stock.

^ reaction time dosent mater when going down the 1/4 mile... i could sit at the light for a minute and still run the same time down the 1/4 mile if i had a .250 reaction time

what was your 1/8th time and speed?

thanks guys, on honda hookup it says a stock b16a should run a 15.6 in a 99 coupe. so if i can hit that or better ill be really happy. mine is really close to that plus i have the jdm 170hp motor.

http://www.hondahookup.com/honda_racing_chart.php

as far as reaction time yes it doesnt matter but i was at the .15ish range. like i said above i was at about 2.5 60ft. our local track is really bad. we dont have 1/8th mile and there are alot of american cars that leave alot of rubber. type r with slicks were doing 2.1-2.2 60ft consistantly. so i figured my 60 ft would be about right considering i have no lsd or slicks and i didnt burn out before.

as for a tune up what should i have done. im going to do the things by myself above. any other ideas on what i should do? or have checked?

Damn that must be a shitty track if cars with slicks are putting down 2.1-2.2 60s. Try going to another track and see what you get there.

wow, ok, i just looked at my exhaust pipe from the header to the cat and its got a 1.75" inner diameter that is crush bent. so in the actual bends its about 1.5". ill get this changed asap. but ill look at the cat next. that is definatly restricting something.

if u cant afford an aftermarket air intake just slap on the oem rubber pipe and a cone filter and u should do some damage.
