Default Welds in the exhaust

I was wondering if numerous welds in an exhaust could cause a loss of horse power. Thanks

as in the number of sections welded together? As long as the inside of the piping isn't covered in crazy puddles from an inexperienced welder, then it should be fine. But the fewer welds the better, less chance of a weld failing, and also it'll look better. Its all about smooth airflow

You mean by refering to the pics?
Weldings on the outside is always a plus, you dont want much welding on the inside of the pipe.
Tig welding is best.

those crush bends are hurting you a lot more than any weld bead....but as said above,a good weld shouldn't interfere much on the inside of the joint.

If I were to supercharge the car, how many HP could be gained by upgrading to a better exhaust? Thanks for your help

BTW I was told that this exhaust is fine and that exhausts make only 10 whp difference on FI hondas. Another guy told me it sucked ***. Another guy told me that it wasn't too bad and the guy who said it sucked *** was a moron. Thanks

it's hard to say a specific number.but, mandrel bends and full 2.5" or even 3" would be a lot better than that crush bent stuff you have now.i'd still go with a custom built setup,as it will save quite a bit of money over some Bling-y aftermarket exhaust, but use mandrel bends(JCWhitney sell them),and get a more skilled welder.

ONLY 10 WHP?!that's quite a bit of power regardless.if you're talking about a 3" straigh through exhaust compared to a stock exhaust,it will make a lot more power.
is your exhaust better than stock?most definately.
is it better than an exhaust of the same diameter, with all mandrel bends?no
if you can afford a better quality built exhaust, get it.if not, keep what you have over stock.
if somebody uses the term "sucked ***",and is a moron,do you need us to tell you if you should believe him?

upgrading to a good exhaust on a FI car will give some pretty decent HP gains..

yeah-it's cruch bent.look at the bends above and below the LCA.see the change in diameter?

chris</TD></TR></TABLE> To me that looks like mandrel bends, crush style would have ripples on the inside of the curve, kinda like fat rolls looking. Mandrel Stretches it as is goes, keeping the same inside diameter, and that is what is appears to be doing. its too smooth for crush. at least a crush done by a common exhaust shop. it could be a cnc bent tube too, which is an intermediate method. Either way, the exhaust is fine and i doubt its worth spending the exessive money for the better exhaust.

Tig welding is best. </TD></TR></TABLE> I couldn't imagine trying to tig weld and entire exhuast, seems like a waste of time. MIG rocks pretty good, it mostly depends on the skill and experience of the operator

that's deifinately NOT mandrel bends.you can easily see on the inner radius of the bend where the piping shrinks in at least .25"-.5"....i've seen muffler shop crush bends that have the ripples, and some that are smooth.i don't know what makes the difference-maybe the wall thickness of the piping or the kind of bender used?
i can take photos of the 2.5" and 3" mandrel bends i have in the garage-they are perfectly round and maintain the exact diameter thorugh the whole 180 degree bend.

you may be right, but in any regards, i don't think he is going to notice a performance advantage at this level.

from what I been told there are 3 methods of bending piping or makin exhuats..

Pressure bend....thats what that is, diameter reduces .25-.5 no ripples
Crush bend......that also reduces but there are ripples or rolls..
Mandrel Bent.....enufff said...

just 2 cents
