Default Weird sound during acceleration. I have indeed searched. :P

I've searched. I've finally got through a timing belt install. Long story short, the damn part store gave me the wrong timing belt, so for a short while the car was running with a belt that was WAY too tight. I have since got the correct belt and a new water pump in case the other one got burnt and now I have a new situation.

I get this funny "metal on metal rubbing" sound starting at 2500 RPM that gets louder as the engine speed increases. Sounds something like what a heavy, poorly oiled pulley would sound like if spun on a metal peg.

Engine is B16A.

Symptoms:
In doesn't do it when the car is cold. But gets worse as the car warms up.
Sound only heard when clutch is engaged and in gear. I can rev the engine out of gear and I hear nothing.
Gets worse as RPMs increase.
It's not a tick, knock, or even a rattle. All heat shields are tight. Cam/Crank timing are perfect. Etc. Etc. It sounds like rubbing.

All this sounds like a clutch issue to me. But anyone have any idea exactly what might be going wrong specifically because this just barely started after a botched timing belt install?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a throwout bearing.

Care to enlighten me further? It just seems strange that a clutch problem starts up after a timing belt install.

The sound is exceptionally prominant. It's no little noise. Any other ideas?

Oh. That's probably my mistake. The clutch is OUT when it makes this noise. Doesn't make any noise when it's in neutral. It seems to get much louder when under load.

I still wonder how this happens from a timing belt change. Possible that I jammed something while getting the crank bolt off?

Wouldn't it be the ISB only if it still make the noise while in neutral?

Correct. If it makes noise with your foot on the clutch pedal, it most likely is the TOB.

When you say 'ON' do you mean with the clutch down?

Clutch on means foot pressing pedal to floor.

Its not the timing belt that caused it. Just a strange coincidence.

Ah. Well in that case it does not make the sound if the clutch is in.

Funny coincidence is a bit much. Never heard a peep out of the tranny. Change the belt, and boom it's there full force. It makes me think it's like a burnt tensioner or something but that wouldn't stop with the clutch in.

Lol. I need someone to drive my car while I sit in the engine bay...

put the shifter in neutral and free rev it with the clutch engauged. if it makes noise, then it is your TOB...

Sorry, to sound like an idiot on this, but are you sure it's the right belt, or if it's on the right way?

Or if not, have a bud do what Link just said, and you just check while the hood is up. or you can take the route a friend of mine took, and take the hood off completely, then clamp mirrors on different spots to where you think the problem is, and position them to where you can see from the seat, and take a few laps in a neighborhood.

Are all your belts tight? Drive belts, anyways? I know when I replaced my alternator, that motherscratcher made some horrendously awful noises. Tightened up the belt, noise go bye-bye.

Yea, for some reason some civics don't have a tensioneer for the alternator? I tried pushing the alternator with my hand to create tension. Wasn't tight enough. This was when I changed my timing belt last month. After everything was done, SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH because of the alternator. I then loosened the alternator, pryed it with a screwdriver, then tightened bolts, and all perfect.

For searching sake, should anyone have a similar problem. It turned out to be the turbo. The shaft had wicked play. The fins were torn to hell. Etc. Etc.

Turbo swap fixed it.

Seems my assumption was accurate.
