Weird electrical gremlin '99 EX (Canadian)
Yesterday, OMW from work, I got on the highway, and accelerated to 100km/h in the 3rd (short ramp, dealing with Ontario drivers' "courtesy"), when all of a sudden, all the gauges zeroed and the car stopped responding to the throttle, but the engine kept running. After a while, the gauges came back, but when I accelerated again (iirc it was also 3rd gear, 100ish), the problem happened again and went away on its own. Didn't happen during normal city street driving.
Nothing looked suspicious at first glance, so I took it in to a mechanic who scanned it and found no errors whatsoever. He was unable to reproduce the problem due to traffic conditions in his area (no uncongested roads where he could speed up to 100km/h) and is completely stumped (and he's usually very good at hunting down electrical gremlins that I'm unable to find myself). Does anyone here have any ideas what to look for? TIA everyone!

Thanks. I don't think he dug that deep. That's the main relay for the fuel pump? Would it really cause:
1) For all the dials, including the speedo and tach to zero? I wasn't stopped and was at times going as fast as 80km/h, while the speedo was indicating zero and the engine was at least idling (even temporarily increasing the RPM's as I geared down, but wouldn't respond to the throttle)
2) For the engine to keep running at least at idle? The engine never shut off on me. It just wasn't responding to my 100% lead foot pressing on the gas pedal
By the way, I really appreciate your input and am not trying to argue with you. It's just that I'm trying to understand the situation instead of randomly changing parts.

Ignition switch. If it happens again, wiggle the key and see if it comes back on. The radio and A/C are on a different circuit through the switch and may not cut out.
If the transmission is in gear and the car is moving, of course the engine will spin. But it is not "running."

Good point... It would have bump-started itself (Do they use that term for cars? Done it on bikes a couple of times) if it was moving fast enough and I don't remember if I left it in gear or just shifted to neutral and coasted. I'll try to wiggle the key next time it happens. Also open to any other suggestions
Edit: Update - SFSG, I tried to reproduce the same conditions both going to and coming back from work, but no issues. Will keep an eye for it. Once again, thanks go out to everyone who posted here
Edit2: Still nothing after several more trips
