Turn it counter clockwise. Do it with a timing gun. If you dont have one and just wanna advance it anyways then just turn it little by little.

Ain't no telling "when" to stop, but you should always change your timing with the help of a timing gun. I don't know how much you want to advance or retard it but just by advancing it all the way won't necessarily guarantee the most power.

I am running a stock Si on 97 or 98.5 octane fuel, any idea how far i can advance it. I was going to put it at 18° BTDC, as the factory settings are 16+/-2°, and i want to be able to run on premium (95 octane in the UK) without it pinking. Just wondering if anyone had messed with it, and gone higher than 18° without getting knock, as i know you guys have lower octane fuel.
any advice appreciated

Re: which way do u turn the distributor to advance timing? (CivicESi)
I have fully advanced my distributor before with just 92 octane gas without any pinging or problems. The only thing you must know is that when you advance your timing that you gain alot in quickness but your overall topspeed is decreased.. And visa versa if you retard your timing.. You will be sluggish off the line but you can attain a higher top speed. So unless you have an MSD or other unit that can retard the timing automatically at a specific RPM, then I would just advance it alittle to get a little more pep, however still maintain good speed in all gears.

Do you get any affect on fuel economy by messing with the timing, i do a lot of miles, so every mpg counts. Didnt think it should affect top speed, as i thought engines automatically advanced the timing to maximum at the top end, to prevent compression ignition, they dont retard at hig speed. So by advancing the distributer you are just limiting the range of advance the engine has got. Whell thats what i think i remember from uni anyway
Jason, just wondering, but do you know how far fully advanced is, or were you not using a timing gun, just messing with the unit itself? I suppose i can find that out though with a timing gun i guess.
anyone know in degrees how far i can go?

Never used a timing gun. Just turned that sucker all the way back towards the fire wall then bolted it back.. Yes you mpg is lower with an advanced timing but that is the price you pay for a little better performance...
If you feel it necessary though, use a timing gun and advance it to the point where you think is best..The most optimum point is dead center though give or take a few degrees...

i thought u advance the timing for better top end and when retarded your low end is good but not the top end.

Nahh... When my engine was advanced low end response is soo much better however I can feel the car winding out as it reached the rev limiter. With timing retarded low end response sucked but top end the car felt like it had so much more room to move...

As a newbie, just curious- I understand that advancing the ignition timing leads to better burning of fuel in the cylinder and therefore leads to an increase in power.Higher power would mean use of higher gears and therefore, in a sedated city driving may lower consumption. Wouldn't that save fuel as opposed to consuming more fuel?
