Default water temp issues

for about 3 months I had an issue with my water temp, I recently figured out the problem.
Alot of feedback on my issue directed me to change the temp sensor, but It turned out to be the thermostat. I am posting this becuase I didnt find anything when I searched the board
here are the symptoms, in the event you have encounter them.

1. the car took a very long time to warm up
2. only at idle, would the temp gauge read a few clicks under the mid point ( a pretty accurate reading for most b/d series motors)
3. when i started driving it around, the temperature would drop dramatically, almost to the cold line.
4. the heater would blow warm air when turned all the way hot and on full blast.

When I pulled the thermostat, I noticed that it was slightly ajar. after replacing the thermo with a new one, the car ones at an adequate operating temp, and the motor has alot more power.
