Wanting to turbo stock b16, NEED HELP!
I have a JDM b16A that I want to turbo. I want to spend around $5K and do a reliable build. I have already priced out driveshaft shop axles, I still need to decide on a clutch, flywheel, lsd tranny, turbo kit, and accessories. I need detailed input because I am going to be doing this on my own. I am mainly concerned with the reliability aspect so boost will stay low. I notice most kits do not have an ecu so I am wondering if I have to get it tuned or just install and it does its thing? I do not want to have to tear into the block because money is limited. There is no reason for a big build because the car will have traction issues. It is going into my 1994 EG.

for a reliable turbo'd car you have to get a tune. you can peice together a turbo kit for 1000-1500, get a 10 or 12 lb flywheel, exedy clutch stage 1 since your not planning on boosting much. and a quaife lsd for you tranny. i recommend using hondata s300 and bring it to a shop to tune your car.

with forjed pistons 300 whp is as far as you should go, here in Brazil the 3 engines that we tried to stan 400hp blew the sleeves.
b16a stock block holds till 330hp more than that is suicide.

the OP needs to browse homemadeturbo.com for maybe a few weeks before he jumps on anything. For one, your best bet is to convert to OBD1, then get a chipped ECU. That alone is a big enough task.
You need to peice together your turbo, and do NOT build it untill you have 100% of the parts. You need to OBD1 that thing 1st, put on the turbo and everything, and run open wastegate to the tuner, and then have them do the afr's, timing, ignition bla bla bla.
With reliability, its all about the tune and the quality of the parts. If you have a good enough tune, you can run a decent ammount of boost.

I did browse homemadeturbo.com and I was not impressed with the progress of the two examples of b16 setups. They were both done by the same guy and in the first instance he blew his first motor and the second time around he was only putting out 200HP. I was thinking of getting a complete kit from one of the main manufacturers rather than piecing it together. I believe they are all direct bolt on and go kits. I like the Greddy kit because it is the cheapest, Drag 3 makes a stand out kit as well. I am all for having the car reflashed but I have no clue where the closest tuner would be. Spokane, WA isn't too far away but just searching for a tuner on Google has not turned up anything.

I will be getting rid of my b16 hydro trans when I get a new one equipped with lsd so if you are interested ironiceeghatch stay posted. from what i have read it is cheaper to get a used jdm lsd tranny than buy the lsd and put it in myself. the tranny is in near perfect condition. i only use my car as a commuter.

with $5000 you can build the internals and run a good bit of boost.
Piece together a kit for ~$1500 and do some serious internal work and tuning on Crome or neptune.

excuse me for saying, but the people that built/tuned those engines sucked. forged internals are not needed for 300whp. sleeves are not needed for 400-500whp, but it sure would be nice as insurance.

excuse me for saying, but the people that built/tuned those engines sucked. forged internals are not needed for 300whp. sleeves are not needed for 400-500whp, but it sure would be nice as insurance.

doood depends on how you use it.
we use the cars on trackdays running on the course all day wich means 2 to 3 thanks of gas, 1 set o tires and 1 set of brake pads tha cars suffer a lot and i can tel more than 300hp with stock internals will end on brokens pistons for sure.
its possible to use close to 400hp only with forjed pistons but the risk is very very big.
the more i look in foruns, texts and other places mor i see tha more than 350hp on a b16a with stock sleeves is to risk too much and since you are using forjed pistons, H conecting rods, arp bolts and a good gasket there is no place for pressure to go, so it will be the sleeve that will go.
somebody´s got to give.
i am not saying tha its the only truth but this is the experience we had here.

stock b16 around 300whp is fine as long as the motor is tuned correctly.
stock sleeves can handle alot, detonation kills sleeves. FORGED pistons might be able to handle detonation, but the stock sleeves can't. PSI DOSENT KILL MOTORS BAD TUNING DOES!

I talked with a tech from turbokits.com about my desires and he said that I should go with the turbonetics complete kit because it comes with a programmed FMU and all I have to do is hook it up and go.

you tell me what the typical is going for and I will get rid of it for $75 less. Also if you are in the state I may be able to save on shipping and deliver it to you when I head over. I just contacted Intec Racing in Kent,WA, and am getting ready to set up a build time and dyno time.

I need to figure out what tranny I am going to run with because my b16 hydro tranny is geared too low for highway driving when in 5th gear? I was thinking the ITR lsd tranny but I have no clue how much those are going for or where I can get one?
