Wacky tachometer

Wacky tachometer
The tachometer on my '95 Civic has been acting strangely. At idle, it may indicate a reading anywhere from 800-2000 rpm. It is not fluctuating, these are steady readings when it is idling, which has always been a steady 800 rpm before this started happening. The engine is not fast idling, this occurs whether the motor is warm or cold. You do get the normal fast idle during a cold start for a minute or two until the motor warms up. When accelerating, the tach will sometimes hesitates, it does not smoothly follow the engine speed always. The engine runs and idles very steady, does not miss or hesitate, just the tach is not responding and indicating normally. It's at 188,600 miles, good gas mileage, not burning oil or smoking. What should I check, where is the tach sensor pickup getting its signal from the engine? The motor is a D15B7, non-VTEC, '95 Civic LX 4 dr automatic.

Re: Wacky tachometer
The tach signal comes from the blue wire attached to the igniter unit in the distributor. Check whether the connection is corroded or loose. In some cases, the fix is to replace the igniter unit itself. Another possibility is that the tach itself is bad. To test, hook up a tach to the connector near the clutch master cylinder to see whether or not it reads correctly.
