Default vx oil cooler

i am thinkning about getting an oil cooler for my turbo d16, when i noticed a vx had a stock oil cooler on it? would it be cheaper and easier to use the parts from a vx to make myself and oil cooler or jsut get an oil cooler kit?

kinda related. would a type r transmission cooler fit on a s20 transmission?

acording to my chiltons the d15z1 (vx) engine has an oil cooler that attaches to the block where the oil filter goes then the filter attaches to that. I am not sure where the lines run for the actual cooler. I only know of the part the has the outlet/ inlet for the oil.

Check where your oil filter goes. do you have 2 lines going from right behind it?

hmm interesting i have never heard of that though i dont recall having one on my stock motor being that i never changed the oil once on it.but if they do have one i imagine you could probly use it you may need a few lines\tubes from a vx along with the cooler.

yea, stock engine got oil cooler, but thats water cool, not air cool. and most of the ppl refer oil cooler to air cool type.

yeah, thats an oil cooler, but not much of one. it does its job on stock honda motors that require it, something like an 18-20F temp drop. But it uses water to do it.

for a turbo, you would be much better off spending the extra money on an external cooler, and you get the added benifit of greater oil capacity

after looking at the diagram in my book, it looks like it could be easily modified to an air cooler. i would need 2 long heat resistat hoses, a small radiator device(trans cooler or whatever) and some clamps.

thanks for clearing up that it was a liquid cooler, i wasnt sure hwo it worked.

I also put in a larger radiator that has spots for the automatic tranny fluid to run through to cool that. i could jsut run the lines tho that also as a really cheap way, what do you guys think about all that stuff?

someone had a pic posted of the cart i am talking about, i'll see if i can find it later today after work.

Yup, the VX has a liquid oil cooler. There is no way you can modify it to make it an air oil cooler though. Coolant (not oil) flows into the tubing connected to the oil cooler. If you extended those lines, you would just be extending the distance the coolant has to travel to enter the cooler.

ah i see all i had was a pic of where it connected to the block, i thought the oil was routed to a cooler then back, but since it was just a coolant pasage it wont work, thanks guys.
