i have reason to belive my vtec solenoid is causing my engine to burn oil. if i rev it up high enough for the vtec to kick in and shift, a bit of blue smoke is shot out of my exhaust pipe. so i wanna test my vtec solenoid. is it possible to perform a test on it with out a honda specific scan tool, or does anyone know of a scan tool capable of activating it, or any other ideas? thanks much guys.

LOL. With all due respect to the OP, the VTEC solenoid has nothing to do with oil being burned. You're leaking oil into the combustion chamber due to weaker seals when the engine is under a more intensive load.

it could be indirectly linked to the VTEC solenoid.

in VTEC lift increases, valves travel a further distance in the guides... if your valve guides are worn, under normal conditions they hold oil back. but, under more strain they leak.

but like the other guys said, under the heavier load of high rpm when VTEC kicks in if your rings/cylinders are worn, you'll leak there too.

I agree with both of them but im here to tell you a vtec solenoid is a moving part that uses the oil to interlock the lifters. Blue smoke in a leak do a compression test. 130 is the lowest it should be. if its any lower than that get ready for a rebuild if it isnt its valve stem seals.

vtec solenoid has nothing to do with it. pistons rings is what u need to check up on. they are probably already getting worned out.

that wut my co worker said at my shop said about the oil getting past the valves. i did already do a compression test (dry and wet) and leak down test. they both tested out fine. well with in spec. no leaks.

You need valve stem seals not to expensive if were a jersey local I could help you out. the seals are about $1 each whats gonna cost you is the labor. You work in a shop but if you dont have the right tools to do it or have never done this it will be a learning experience. Its not a hard job but it is time consuming.

thankx for the help. I did another compression and leak down tests. the compression was fine on all 4 cyl's. the leak down test showed cylinder 4 was leaking about 21% out of the intake. i was also told that my seals are probably hard and need replacement by the senior tech in my shop. Well, thanks for the help.

you can have good compression and bad rings ive had that experience. good compression does not equal good rings

your right but you will have an obvious 1 that is bad or the cylinders psi will be extremely different. im talking about more than a 13psi difference, and of course im talking about a stock motor.
